Wow, it's not native on the iPhone? I love my HP/Palm Pre+ - Synergy keeps my contacts, calendar and email all synced with my Google account. Automatically and nothing to install. Is on all webOS devices.
I use Google Sync on my iPhone but can't seem to access my "send mail as" addresses from GMail. Do I need to reactivate my Mail account on the iPhone or otherwise to gain the new feature?
This is great. Not having the server side search has been a bit limiting on iOS. Still wish we could have the GMail app like Android, but Apple would never allow it.
Is there going to finally be a way for mail that is deleted on the phone to be actually deleted and not just archived? I don't see the point of keeping things like ad emails and the like forever and ever. Things that I think are important are labelled anyway :)
seems best to set up your main gmail as an exchange. Then there's no headaches and you get all the function.
Oh, and @dave, i used to have a pre plus, which was fun and all... but got tired of waiting for some decent hardware... so on the 24th i will be rockin' a new evo 3d.
I agree with @mero... the biggest drawback I see, and have seen since Google Sync is not being able to 'Delete' an email. Instead the messages are sent to the archive folder. What a drag!!!!
Great updates but still missing an obvious one.. Please let us actually delete a message when we delete it on the iPhone! Currently it just archives it. I find myself cleaning out my "all mail" file and re-deleting all those messages again.
That's IMAP you're mentioning. Google Sync uses the Exchange ActiveSync option, and for some unfathomable reason Google continue to have the Delete option archive emails rather than putting them in Trash.
For this reason alone I have to use both the mail.app AND the web interface when I want to delete anything. Very frustrating.
Carlos, the setting you mention is only for IMAP accounts, not for the Exchange accounts (Google Sync). This bugs me, too. Have a workaround for that (a specific folder) but that less than ideal. Tried to go back to IMAP but then I loose push and that's a deal breaker.
The ability to search the server would be a great new feature if it were in any way actually usable. I just did a search and it worked, but the found messages were then marked as unread in my mailbox, despite the fact that they were all old messages. I had to manually go through and open all 57 messages in order to get rid of their "unread" status.
You can only go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts and Calendars and change that setting if you've set up a Gmail type account, not using the Microsoft Exchange account type.
It would be VERY useful for Google to include this in their EAS implementation - to actually delete a message rather than just removing all of its labels.
These are great changes, but to be honest are mostly worthless to me unless you actually let me delete an email instead of always archiving it. People do not want to archive every single email they receive. Until I can actually delete something when I hit "delete" on my iphone then I will be forced to continue using imap for my mail.
These features are good and all, but the deal breaker for me is the delete issue so many have mentioned. It was 6 weeks before I realized my mail wasn't 'deleted' only archived. Haven't had the time to go through all those messages yet and actually delete the ones I already thought were deleted. It's imap for me until this is resolved.
Is there any way to get gmail labels to show up on the iPhone Mail app? This really bugs me because i really try to keep my gmail organized with labels but I can't see that on the iPhone.
I agree with Jarrod Whaley. Search on server now works-which is great, but I ended up with 34 emails now marked unread that i now have to track down and mark as read- NO THANKS, this makes this a "feature that i will now never use.
the app is bugged. Once you try to search an email on your server's email, it returns that all that founded are not read. And there's no way to set them "all read" but to open all of them.
I got the "send as" feature working. The instructions are on the "Setting up Google Sync with your iOS device" page (link at the end of the blog entry).
I followed the instructions and when you create a new email, the outgoing message will still have your "@gmail.com" address. However, when the message is sent, Google sync will change the address.

How about for users of Google Apps Sync for Outlook? Just tested and the meeting invite worked as expected in iOS when the original sender uses the Gmail/Calendar web interface, but when I tried through Outlook it still just sends the recipient an email with an attachment that gives them the option to Accept, Decline, or Edit, but despite whatever they select, it doesn't update their calendar or the original sender's calendar in Outlook.
Also, the invite appears in the iOS Invitation area if sent through Gmail/Calendar, but again still does not if sent through Outlook using Apps Sync for Outlook.

There's a big problem if I'm not wrong. When we search a term, it shows the results as unread and after we cancel search, the unread count never disappears from the title of Inbox or All Mail.

From what I can tell "Send Mail As" does NOT give you the option to send mail as ANY of the addresses you've configured in Gmail. It only lets you send mail as the DEFAULT address. Basically this new feature only gives you the ability to change your one default send as address from iOS. For me, my default address is my parent Gmail address...so this does absolutely nothing for me.
i'm going to agree with mike here, it only changes it to send from the address you set as default, NOT so you can select one of your multiple addresses on-the-fly. unfortunate, given that everything i deal with is forwarded to my one main gmail account and even though mail.app will tell me it's been sent to a different address, i can't actually choose to reply from that address.
Great idea as I'm constantly having to go to the web app to search for emails but the issue that i'm having with the new feature is not worth it to me. All of my search results are being flagged as unread and messing with my badges and inbox counts. Once I noticed this I had to remember all the searches I've done today and go through each one to mark as unread... A for effort and idea... once this is fixed it'll be a good implementation.
Reading the headline, I got all excited. Unfortunately the new features don't help me (like many others) as long as you can't delete messegase via Sync. I've switched back to IMAP. Oh and search is working there, too.
Problem: After searching on server, now my new mail badge (count) increases by the number of results it finds on the server. I had zero new mail, then performed a sarch on the server and now it says I have 20 new mails(which I obviously do not.
OK seems as if you wait a couple of minutes the unread mail number drops back down, excluding the "search on server results". I can live with that, although it is still kind of annoying.
Um, guys, having the trash button archive rather than delete e-mail is by far the more sensible decision. The Mail app doesn't have any concept of archiving e-mail, so it doesn't have separate buttons for the two. Google has to choose one function or the other.
The whole point of Gmail is that you should archive more emails than you delete. I've been archiving almost every email I've received for six years and I'm only up to 7% usage. Granted: I'm not the heaviest e-mail user. But still, seven percent.
If Google did what you guys are begging for, the outrage would be enormous and completely correct. Not only would there now no longer be a way to use Gmail's PRIMARY FUNCTION from the Mail app, but people would be trashing important emails for days or weeks or months before they realized they weren't archiving anymore.
You guys are just plain wrong. If you are trashing more emails than you're archiving, then you should be using something other than Gmail. Google, please, please, please never listen to these folks.
Agreed that the "send-as" option update is pretty anticlimactic if I can't choose which address to send-as on the fly. Was hoping to deactivate my spare IMAP accounts that are only on my iPhone to give me send-as-ability.
Server search still not working for me, s/p restart, messing with GSync, turning the account on/off, etc.
Don't understand all the hullabaloo regarding inability to delete the emails. I much prefer archiving them.
How about adding Sync configuration support to the Google Mobile App for iOS, so we don't have to fuss around with the (very unfriendly) m.google.com/sync interface?
Unfortunately "search on server" is limited to your current folder.
For example, on my iPhone I'm usually inside the "Inbox" folder, and only returns results for emails in "Inbox". I have to go to "All Mail" to search old archived mail.
Not sure if Google can fix this on their end or if the iPhone mail app limits the search scope to "current folder".
@attilag78: I'm not judging your email usage, exactly, except to say that it is decidedly not Gmail-esque.
The core assumption of Gmail is that you should not have to delete your email. When it first came out, you could not delete email unless you flagged it as Spam. From Google's perspective, either you want to receive it, in which case you should get to keep it, or you don't want to receive it, in which case you should unsubscribe from it or flag it as spam.
I'm not saying there's anything "wrong," per se, with deleting your email. If you like it, that's fine. You'd probably like to file your emails into a folder hierarchy, too, which is also fine.
But you should not complain or be surprised when Google's priority is not to let you delete email on iOS, especially when the alternative is allowing no way to Archive mail on iOS! Archiving is the Gmailish option. Deleting is not.
Don't get me wrong; I would LOVE it if Apple added an Archive button alongside the Trash button so we would both be happy. I think they should do it. I think all email providers should add Archiving as an option.
But if you're using Gmail, and if you're given the constraint of allowing either Archiving or deleting, then there is no doubt that the correct choice is to allow Archiving.
I'm just another one who ended up with bunch of unread mail after searching for messages on server. I would rather welcome more polished contacts syncing, groups are impossible, custom label for phone numbers is unavailable, I'm waiting for unlimited sync of all details, not just few mobile few this and few that...
@75th Trombone: without going into details: again, I receive emails that I want to receive, I want to read and then delete. Typical examples are different deals from like Amazon or Babies R Us (I'm a dad). Why should I archive these emails after the deals expired?
Other emails I want to archive and do it. Many-many emails have several labels, I think this is very Gmail-esque. (I hate that I can't put my work emails into several folders in Outlook btw.)
I believe ourviews are so different because we use email differently. I do a lot on the desktop web interface but sometimes I wanna triage my email from the phone. Android's Gmail app is way better than anything else under the Sun (for me at least) but the I prefer ultimately the iOS experience - so I'm "stuck" with the iPhone. I'd be happy if El Goog would just release a native Gmail app a la Voice.
In the meantime I created a label that I use for trashing so I have a pretty good workaround.

There is one thing I find frustrating about GoogleSync and I hope Google find a way around this. It may be a constraint brought from the Exchange service, however, I'm not sure if that is truly the case.
I hate the way GoogleSync reduces the resolution of my contact images, please support higher resolution images and non-square images for the iPhone. This is something I've been waiting for.
After reading the comments on this post and testing out the features myself, I've come to two conclusions:
1) The new features are not implemented completely, and have issues (Calendar invitations via Outlook not working, Send As not being as comprehensive as one would expect).
2) The issues with EXISTING features (deleting instead of archiving via exchange) have not been addressed.
I appreciate the attempt at making the iOS gmail experience better, but this effort is what most people maligned Windows Vista to be: an embarrassing flop.
Google, please fix delete in google sync to actually delete, not archive! This is an infuriating long term bug. What is the reason why you are not addressing this?
Am I an anomaly here or are people really not able to find the setting to turn off/on archiving?
I've been deleting emails in my Gmail account directly from iOS Mail for awhile now. If you go to your Gmail account settings you should see a big switch to turn Archiving off.
I must be special or something... cause there is no way this many people really can't figure that out. I wonder how many of them will check back on this post and read this. Unfortunately, none of them probably will... and will go on blaming Google for not doing something that is already done.
75th Trombone gets it. Gmail has always been about keeping everything and then (through superior search tools) being able to find what you want. Deleting, filing, rules and all that stuff Outlook users waste their time on are anathema to Gmail. Even labels are only there because the dedicated folder-filers insisted on having a way to waste their time organizing mail. The search function works and if you want to search all your mail (instead of just Inbox) you just have to navigate to the All Mail folder. As to the Send mail as...function Google just said they would respect your setting, not choose the address to use each time. Again, it's working as designed.
Setting a default "mail from" address is nice, but I'd much prefer the option to have mail sent from the account to which it was addressed, as long as that account is already one that you've added to your Gmail. The feature is already available in Gmail itself. Getting it into iOS would be welcome.
Nice for frustated on device.. These are uppercase changes, but to be straight are mostly meritless to me unless you actually let me withdraw an netmail instead of always archiving it. Grouping do not necessary to archives every unary netmail they acquire. Until I can actually take something when I hit withdraw on my iphone then I instrument be affected to preserve using imap for my aggregation.
@Brett Bollman, that archive/delete option is only available to you because you use imap for your gmail. It is not available to anybody who uses google sync (i.e. exchange sync).
Google need to add an archive/delete gmail option to m.google.com/sync.

75th Trombone, I'm glad you keep all your junk mail and still only have 7% used. I've been with Gmail since 2004 and my account is 75% full. Imagine how much worse it would be if I kept all the Facebook notifications, shopping deals, forum updates, etc., which I'll never have a need to search in my life. My account would be beyond full. I guess I'm just not the kind of user Gmail wants.
Gmail, please don't listen to this guy. Practically everyone else on this thread has been clamoring for the ability to delete e-mails from within iOS. It's possible that, as 75th Trombone suggests, he's the only worthy Gmail user out of all the people posting here, but I think setting bizarre expectations for your customers and then refusing to listen when they nearly unanimously complain about it is considered pretty bad customer service.
And that thing about disabling archiving in order to enable trashing is BS - all you'd have to do to archive mail is send it to the All Mail folder, just like people who use Gmail through IMAP do. You'd have both options. But right now there is literally no way for you to send mail to trash from within iOS using Sync - moving to the Trash folder, bizarrely enough, also sends it to All Mail. Come on, don't impose unnecessary restrictions on your customers because you think you know better. If this many people want the ability to delete the mail they'll never need again, give it to them.
I'd also like to add my voice to the people who want actual Send As functionality. It's nice that this feature got added in some way, but it's still borderline useless for most of us who want to be able to send mail from different addresses (e.g., school or work addresses) some of the time, not all the time. If I wanted a Mail account which could only send messages from an address that wasn't my Gmail address, I'd just set up a separate account for it, rather than take away my ability to send mail from my Gmail address.
For those getting the unread badge issue after searching, I have found that if you go to the home screen and double press the home button, then kill the mail app it clears the unread badge when you reload mail again. Sometimes you might have to do it twice.
Not great but seems to be a temporary workaround so you don't have a badge telling you to read hundreds of emails.
Great. I tried a search on the server. It worked, but now I have a great big "100" tag on my Mail app. it thinks my Google Sync account has 100 new emails.
Please add "Archive Mail" support to Google Sync iOS Mail settings.
As long as Google Sync on iOS doesn't support "Archive" mail instead of "Delete", the way the "GMAIL Account" iPhone Mail account configuration does, I will not be Google Sync for Mail sync, only for Contact and Calendar.
Searches on the server are only returning results based on the subject line (I.e., if I search for "book" I'll get results where "book" is in the subject line, but not where it's only in the body). Am I missing something? Is there a way to server-search the bodies of emails which have not yet been downloaded to the iDevive?
These features are great additions to Google Sync, but the support pages leave a lot to be desired. Like other posters I'm not sure exactly what to expect from search and have yet to get "send mail as" working.
@RaslDasl: you should probably first learn one thing about the world: it's not black and white but many shades of grey. You wrote all the BS in your comment w/o accepting the fact that different people have different usage scenarios for email.
I think I'm intelligent enough to decide whether I want to delete or archive an email. Believe me: I receive emails that I do not intend to keep as I and Adam wrote before. Why is that so hard to believe AND accept???
And yes, I'm an Outlook user - as I happen to work for a pretty big company (50K+ employees). I don't like it but this shouldn't render me a worse human than you.
I'm happy for you that you can get through your email without any organization just by using search. I can't do that and that's why I use labels. Now reading that I may be a lesser valued human than you as I clearly don't have the brain capacity you have...
Sarcasm put to the side: RaslDasl and all the other perfect Gmail users, please accept that there's no one and only way of using Gmail. We want an option. If you don't want to use it, feel free to do that - but don't tell us that we're not supposed to do this or that.
For those who had the problem of searching and got emails marked as UNREAD.
I had a workaround.
I just close the mail app from the running apps. Double press the Home button, keep pressing the mail app and then close it. I opened it again and back to normal.
Why are we even having a philosophical "perfect" Gmail user discussion here? IMAP allows you to configure how your deletes work. Why on earth not add an option to this very same page to allow you to configure how EAS works?? Personally I delete. I NEVER archive without at least applying one label. But I respect that others do this differently. Make it an option. It truly can't be that hard.
And while your at it, could you finally add the #1 requested feature--filter by UNLABELED???? Another seemingly simple feature left completely ignored for seven years.
The "Unread" search results error does appear to be a bug, but people should know that if you let it sit for a while the phantom "unread" items will disappear. It's annoying, but it's not doing actual damage and doesn't force you to correct it. I look forward to Google fixing the bug, but in the meantime I am very grateful for the feature. It'll be great not having to switch to the browser version of Gmail when I want to find something a little further back.
There is a simple solution to delete a message using Exchange. Go into the message, choose the Move to icon at the bottom, and move it to the Trash folder. This will delete your message and not archive it.
@Nuno - then go to your gmail web client and check your "All Mail" and you will see that the message is still there, i.e. not deleted into Trash. If it is deleted then you are using imap, not google sync.
Don't worry, you are not the first person who has come along and written something completely erroneous about this archive/delete gmail google sync issue.
After visiting http://m.google.com/sync I was able to successfully set up my Google ex Jane account on my iPhone to use the "send from" feature and also link my google calendar to exchange. I tested sending an email, and selected my hotmail email account in the "From:" field and Ireland great! I also used my Hotmail calendar to sent an invite to my gmail address, and was able to successfully accept the meeting invite, shows up in my calendar now.
I've always had the delete problem too. A few minutes ago I tried again and the message actually moved to the trash, despite being marked with the inbox label anyway. It somehow worked! I'm using Exchange protocol, not IMAP. Reports?
Google Sync for iPhone supports all three forms of delete: archive, move-to-trash, and permanent delete. For the default action, we decided to err on the safer side and ensure that information is not deleted. But we do support all three, as mentioned in this help article.

"Google Sync for iOS" is Google's branding for using their services via the Exchange features in iOS. There is nothing to install.

The archive instead of delete is an email setting you need to disable in iOS.
As for the calendar invites, I also had those working for quite a while now.

Here's my workaround for the issue where you can't delete messages using Google Sync...
I setup an IMAP account just for my email. I setup a second Exchange account to access my contacts and calendars.
Both the IMAP and Exchange accounts are both using the same Google Apps account.
Seems to work, but agreed that it shouldn't be necessary to setup my account twice just so that I can delete email messages.

I agree with Jarrod Whaley. Search on server now works-which is great, but I ended up with 34 emails now marked unread that i now have to track down and mark as read- NO THANKS, this makes this a "feature that i will now never use.

the app is bugged. Once you try to search an email on your server's email, it returns that all that founded are not read.
And there's no way to set them "all read" but to open all of them.

I got the "send as" feature working. The instructions are on the "Setting up Google Sync with your iOS device" page (link at the end of the blog entry).
I followed the instructions and when you create a new email, the outgoing message will still have your "@gmail.com" address. However, when the message is sent, Google sync will change the address.

How about for users of Google Apps Sync for Outlook? Just tested and the meeting invite worked as expected in iOS when the original sender uses the Gmail/Calendar web interface, but when I tried through Outlook it still just sends the recipient an email with an attachment that gives them the option to Accept, Decline, or Edit, but despite whatever they select, it doesn't update their calendar or the original sender's calendar in Outlook.
Also, the invite appears in the iOS Invitation area if sent through Gmail/Calendar, but again still does not if sent through Outlook using Apps Sync for Outlook.

Agree with Eric and Contz, the Search on Server feature does function, but you end up with a bunch of "unread" messages on your iOS device. Odd.

There's a big problem if I'm not wrong. When we search a term, it shows the results as unread and after we cancel search, the unread count never disappears from the title of Inbox or All Mail.
Am I wrong Mr. Google? Anyone has the same problem?

From what I can tell "Send Mail As" does NOT give you the option to send mail as ANY of the addresses you've configured in Gmail. It only lets you send mail as the DEFAULT address. Basically this new feature only gives you the ability to change your one default send as address from iOS. For me, my default address is my parent Gmail address...so this does absolutely nothing for me.

As someone said before there is a BUG in the new search that is marking the results returned as unread even though they were already read long ago!
And now the iPhone says there are 81 unread messages which I can't even see on Mail. Good work Google... ¬¬

i'm going to agree with mike here, it only changes it to send from the address you set as default, NOT so you can select one of your multiple addresses on-the-fly. unfortunate, given that everything i deal with is forwarded to my one main gmail account and even though mail.app will tell me it's been sent to a different address, i can't actually choose to reply from that address.

Great idea as I'm constantly having to go to the web app to search for emails but the issue that i'm having with the new feature is not worth it to me. All of my search results are being flagged as unread and messing with my badges and inbox counts. Once I noticed this I had to remember all the searches I've done today and go through each one to mark as unread... A for effort and idea... once this is fixed it'll be a good implementation.

Reading the headline, I got all excited. Unfortunately the new features don't help me (like many others) as long as you can't delete messegase via Sync. I've switched back to IMAP. Oh and search is working there, too.

Problem: After searching on server, now my new mail badge (count) increases by the number of results it finds on the server. I had zero new mail, then performed a sarch on the server and now it says I have 20 new mails(which I obviously do not.

OK seems as if you wait a couple of minutes the unread mail number drops back down, excluding the "search on server results". I can live with that, although it is still kind of annoying.

My messages are still being sent from the @gmail.com account, even if I set my secondary email address as the default one.
Beside that, the biggest gripe is that I can't still delete a message. It get always archived.
Still not ready. Looking forward to iCloud...

Um, guys, having the trash button archive rather than delete e-mail is by far the more sensible decision. The Mail app doesn't have any concept of archiving e-mail, so it doesn't have separate buttons for the two. Google has to choose one function or the other.
The whole point of Gmail is that you should archive more emails than you delete. I've been archiving almost every email I've received for six years and I'm only up to 7% usage. Granted: I'm not the heaviest e-mail user. But still, seven percent.
If Google did what you guys are begging for, the outrage would be enormous and completely correct. Not only would there now no longer be a way to use Gmail's PRIMARY FUNCTION from the Mail app, but people would be trashing important emails for days or weeks or months before they realized they weren't archiving anymore.
You guys are just plain wrong. If you are trashing more emails than you're archiving, then you should be using something other than Gmail. Google, please, please, please never listen to these folks.

Agreed that the "send-as" option update is pretty anticlimactic if I can't choose which address to send-as on the fly. Was hoping to deactivate my spare IMAP accounts that are only on my iPhone to give me send-as-ability.
Server search still not working for me, s/p restart, messing with GSync, turning the account on/off, etc.
Don't understand all the hullabaloo regarding inability to delete the emails. I much prefer archiving them.

@75th Trombone: I receive tons of emails that I don't want to archive (newsletters, advertisements) as Gmail is aggregating several inboxes.
I highly advise not to judge other people's email usage if you don't know what they do (should I say you're trolling?).

Unfortunately "search on server" is limited to your current folder.
For example, on my iPhone I'm usually inside the "Inbox" folder, and only returns results for emails in "Inbox". I have to go to "All Mail" to search old archived mail.
Not sure if Google can fix this on their end or if the iPhone mail app limits the search scope to "current folder".

@attilag78: I'm not judging your email usage, exactly, except to say that it is decidedly not Gmail-esque.
The core assumption of Gmail is that you should not have to delete your email. When it first came out, you could not delete email unless you flagged it as Spam. From Google's perspective, either you want to receive it, in which case you should get to keep it, or you don't want to receive it, in which case you should unsubscribe from it or flag it as spam.
I'm not saying there's anything "wrong," per se, with deleting your email. If you like it, that's fine. You'd probably like to file your emails into a folder hierarchy, too, which is also fine.
But you should not complain or be surprised when Google's priority is not to let you delete email on iOS, especially when the alternative is allowing no way to Archive mail on iOS! Archiving is the Gmailish option. Deleting is not.
Don't get me wrong; I would LOVE it if Apple added an Archive button alongside the Trash button so we would both be happy. I think they should do it. I think all email providers should add Archiving as an option.
But if you're using Gmail, and if you're given the constraint of allowing either Archiving or deleting, then there is no doubt that the correct choice is to allow Archiving.

I'm just another one who ended up with bunch of unread mail after searching for messages on server.
I would rather welcome more polished contacts syncing, groups are impossible, custom label for phone numbers is unavailable, I'm waiting for unlimited sync of all details, not just few mobile few this and few that...

@75th Trombone: without going into details: again, I receive emails that I want to receive, I want to read and then delete. Typical examples are different deals from like Amazon or Babies R Us (I'm a dad). Why should I archive these emails after the deals expired?
Other emails I want to archive and do it. Many-many emails have several labels, I think this is very Gmail-esque. (I hate that I can't put my work emails into several folders in Outlook btw.)
I believe ourviews are so different because we use email differently. I do a lot on the desktop web interface but sometimes I wanna triage my email from the phone. Android's Gmail app is way better than anything else under the Sun (for me at least) but the I prefer ultimately the iOS experience - so I'm "stuck" with the iPhone. I'd be happy if El Goog would just release a native Gmail app a la Voice.
In the meantime I created a label that I use for trashing so I have a pretty good workaround.

There is one thing I find frustrating about GoogleSync and I hope Google find a way around this. It may be a constraint brought from the Exchange service, however, I'm not sure if that is truly the case.
I hate the way GoogleSync reduces the resolution of my contact images, please support higher resolution images and non-square images for the iPhone. This is something I've been waiting for.

After reading the comments on this post and testing out the features myself, I've come to two conclusions:
1) The new features are not implemented completely, and have issues (Calendar invitations via Outlook not working, Send As not being as comprehensive as one would expect).
2) The issues with EXISTING features (deleting instead of archiving via exchange) have not been addressed.
I appreciate the attempt at making the iOS gmail experience better, but this effort is what most people maligned Windows Vista to be: an embarrassing flop.

I'm having the same problem as @Tegola.
I've gone to m.google.com/sync and enabled my device for "Send Mail As".
I've made my desired email address the default address via the Gmail settings.
But when I send from the iOS Mail App, it still shows my Gmail address, not my custom address. Of course my custom address works fine in the web UI.
I've been waiting a long time for this to work, so I'd really appreciate any insights into how I can make this work!

Am I an anomaly here or are people really not able to find the setting to turn off/on archiving?
I've been deleting emails in my Gmail account directly from iOS Mail for awhile now. If you go to your Gmail account settings you should see a big switch to turn Archiving off.
I must be special or something... cause there is no way this many people really can't figure that out. I wonder how many of them will check back on this post and read this. Unfortunately, none of them probably will... and will go on blaming Google for not doing something that is already done.

75th Trombone gets it. Gmail has always been about keeping everything and then (through superior search tools) being able to find what you want. Deleting, filing, rules and all that stuff Outlook users waste their time on are anathema to Gmail. Even labels are only there because the dedicated folder-filers insisted on having a way to waste their time organizing mail. The search function works and if you want to search all your mail (instead of just Inbox) you just have to navigate to the All Mail folder. As to the Send mail as...function Google just said they would respect your setting, not choose the address to use each time. Again, it's working as designed.

Setting a default "mail from" address is nice, but I'd much prefer the option to have mail sent from the account to which it was addressed, as long as that account is already one that you've added to your Gmail. The feature is already available in Gmail itself. Getting it into iOS would be welcome.

Nice for frustated on device..
These are uppercase changes, but to be straight are mostly meritless to me unless you actually let me withdraw an netmail instead of always archiving it. Grouping do not necessary to archives every unary netmail they acquire. Until I can actually take something when I hit withdraw on my iphone then I instrument be affected to preserve using imap for my aggregation.

@Brett Bollman, that archive/delete option is only available to you because you use imap for your gmail. It is not available to anybody who uses google sync (i.e. exchange sync).
Google need to add an archive/delete gmail option to m.google.com/sync.

My iPad has stopped pushing emails ever since these updates went through. iPhone is fine though. Have removed and re-added account and done a factory restore... Still doesnt work.

I guess improving Google Sync is quite difficult. Neither iPhone mail.app nor MS Exchange are designed for Gmail.

75th Trombone, I'm glad you keep all your junk mail and still only have 7% used. I've been with Gmail since 2004 and my account is 75% full. Imagine how much worse it would be if I kept all the Facebook notifications, shopping deals, forum updates, etc., which I'll never have a need to search in my life. My account would be beyond full. I guess I'm just not the kind of user Gmail wants.
Gmail, please don't listen to this guy. Practically everyone else on this thread has been clamoring for the ability to delete e-mails from within iOS. It's possible that, as 75th Trombone suggests, he's the only worthy Gmail user out of all the people posting here, but I think setting bizarre expectations for your customers and then refusing to listen when they nearly unanimously complain about it is considered pretty bad customer service.
And that thing about disabling archiving in order to enable trashing is BS - all you'd have to do to archive mail is send it to the All Mail folder, just like people who use Gmail through IMAP do. You'd have both options. But right now there is literally no way for you to send mail to trash from within iOS using Sync - moving to the Trash folder, bizarrely enough, also sends it to All Mail. Come on, don't impose unnecessary restrictions on your customers because you think you know better. If this many people want the ability to delete the mail they'll never need again, give it to them.
I'd also like to add my voice to the people who want actual Send As functionality. It's nice that this feature got added in some way, but it's still borderline useless for most of us who want to be able to send mail from different addresses (e.g., school or work addresses) some of the time, not all the time. If I wanted a Mail account which could only send messages from an address that wasn't my Gmail address, I'd just set up a separate account for it, rather than take away my ability to send mail from my Gmail address.

For those getting the unread badge issue after searching, I have found that if you go to the home screen and double press the home button, then kill the mail app it clears the unread badge when you reload mail again. Sometimes you might have to do it twice.
Not great but seems to be a temporary workaround so you don't have a badge telling you to read hundreds of emails.

Please add "Archive Mail" support to Google Sync iOS Mail settings.
As long as Google Sync on iOS doesn't support "Archive" mail instead of "Delete", the way the "GMAIL Account" iPhone Mail account configuration does, I will not be Google Sync for Mail sync, only for Contact and Calendar.

Searches on the server are only returning results based on the subject line (I.e., if I search for "book" I'll get results where "book" is in the subject line, but not where it's only in the body). Am I missing something? Is there a way to server-search the bodies of emails which have not yet been downloaded to the iDevive?

These features are great additions to Google Sync, but the support pages leave a lot to be desired. Like other posters I'm not sure exactly what to expect from search and have yet to get "send mail as" working.

@RaslDasl: you should probably first learn one thing about the world: it's not black and white but many shades of grey. You wrote all the BS in your comment w/o accepting the fact that different people have different usage scenarios for email.
I think I'm intelligent enough to decide whether I want to delete or archive an email. Believe me: I receive emails that I do not intend to keep as I and Adam wrote before. Why is that so hard to believe AND accept???
And yes, I'm an Outlook user - as I happen to work for a pretty big company (50K+ employees). I don't like it but this shouldn't render me a worse human than you.
I'm happy for you that you can get through your email without any organization just by using search. I can't do that and that's why I use labels. Now reading that I may be a lesser valued human than you as I clearly don't have the brain capacity you have...
Sarcasm put to the side: RaslDasl and all the other perfect Gmail users, please accept that there's no one and only way of using Gmail. We want an option. If you don't want to use it, feel free to do that - but don't tell us that we're not supposed to do this or that.

For those who had the problem of searching and got emails marked as UNREAD.
I had a workaround.
I just close the mail app from the running apps. Double press the Home button, keep pressing the mail app and then close it. I opened it again and back to normal.
Use Search option only when urgent..i guess?

Why are we even having a philosophical "perfect" Gmail user discussion here? IMAP allows you to configure how your deletes work. Why on earth not add an option to this very same page to allow you to configure how EAS works?? Personally I delete. I NEVER archive without at least applying one label. But I respect that others do this differently. Make it an option. It truly can't be that hard.
And while your at it, could you finally add the #1 requested feature--filter by UNLABELED???? Another seemingly simple feature left completely ignored for seven years.

Paul, it's a bad workaround but in case you haven't figured it out or seen it somewhere, a search like
-label "A" -label "B" -label "C"
if you have labels A, B, and C should do the trick.
(It'll return some conversations with labels on them, but this means some messages within the conversation aren't labeled.)

The "Unread" search results error does appear to be a bug, but people should know that if you let it sit for a while the phantom "unread" items will disappear. It's annoying, but it's not doing actual damage and doesn't force you to correct it. I look forward to Google fixing the bug, but in the meantime I am very grateful for the feature. It'll be great not having to switch to the browser version of Gmail when I want to find something a little further back.

How to delete a message using Gmail Exhange:
There is a simple solution to delete a message using Exchange. Go into the message, choose the Move to icon at the bottom, and move it to the Trash folder. This will delete your message and not archive it.

@Nuno - then go to your gmail web client and check your "All Mail" and you will see that the message is still there, i.e. not deleted into Trash. If it is deleted then you are using imap, not google sync.
Don't worry, you are not the first person who has come along and written something completely erroneous about this archive/delete gmail google sync issue.

Okay, a nice work around is to create a Label in Gmail called Trash, then on the iPhone, move any messages you want to delete to this label.
When you're on a desktop again, you can delete all messages with the label Trash.
Seems like the easiest work around right now.

After visiting http://m.google.com/sync I was able to successfully set up my Google ex Jane account on my iPhone to use the "send from" feature and also link my google calendar to exchange. I tested sending an email, and selected my hotmail email account in the "From:" field and Ireland great! I also used my Hotmail calendar to sent an invite to my gmail address, and was able to successfully accept the meeting invite, shows up in my calendar now.

I've always had the delete problem too. A few minutes ago I tried again and the message actually moved to the trash, despite being marked with the inbox label anyway. It somehow worked!
I'm using Exchange protocol, not IMAP. Reports?

Let me address several issues mentioned above:
Google Sync for iPhone supports all three forms of delete: archive, move-to-trash, and permanent delete. For the default action, we decided to err on the safer side and ensure that information is not deleted. But we do support all three, as mentioned in this help article.
Thanks for telling us about the issue where read messages appear unread in search results. I think I've tracked down the problem and am putting together a fix now. Please follow this thread for updates,
If you want to search all messages and not just a single folder, perform your search from the "[Gmail]/All Mail" folder on your iPhone.
