Google Groups - Message Moderation Tracking

We have an issue where messages that are going to our google groups are being treated as spam and being held up for moderation.

I will be changing spam moderation to allow and NOT moderate and let my smart host take care of the spam investigation.

My issue is finding out from all of my groups if there are any pending messages to approve and being treated as spam so I don't have to check all my groups if there are messages to approve. I have over 100 groups and don't plan to go through each one.

I can't find a report to see this.

any suggestions?

Hi @danieldibono

I would not recommend disabling moderation of the Google Groups, this is because of the security reasons. When the moderation is turned off, spoofed messages can reach all the members of the group. Also it's easier to catch a spam massage once when it hits a group instead of deleting it from all the mailboxes (group members). It's much safer to set it to 'Notify moderators' so they are aware of any new messages.

Another thing is that there's always a reason, why these messages are classified by the group as spam - probably the sender has incorrect configuration when it comes to the authentication (such as wrong SPF record, or the message is being sent without authentication at all). If these are internal messages - it's better to correct the settings, than turning off the moderation. If external - the sender should take care of this (you can check the reason by analyzing the message header).

Answering the second part of your message, currently there's no API that supports listing all the messages in the queue of the Google group, so the only way to list/approve will be on the group level.

Hope this at least answers your questions partially,
Have a great weekend ahead,
Marcin

@danieldibono - I am having a similar issue. Have you found a way to get notified of pending messages requiring moderation?

Going to the group settings at the Google Groups site, you need to set 2 things:

  • Spam message handling (Choose how to handle spam) > Moderate and notify content moderators
  •  Who can moderate content: group owners / managers / members / entire organization (Make sure you are a group owner or manager, if set that option)

This must be done one by one. I can't find the way to put it as default for everyone.
