AK-V TRIGGER SWAP - PSA QUICK TIP

Hey guys, welcome back. Tye here with another quick tip from Palmetto State Armory. Today, we're going to be swapping out the trigger on our AK-V. So let's jump right in. The trigger we're swapping to today is the PSA custom AK-47 enhanced nickel boron fire control group. Inside you'll find the trigger, the disconnector, the disconnector spring, the hammer, the mainspring, trigger and hammer pins, trigger sleeve, and the pin retaining plate.
This process is going to include pretty much any trigger on the market for your AK or AK-V. So it's key to make sure that you have these components when you go to install. Now for the tools, we're going to need a hammer, a punch (today I'll be using a 5/32), a pair of pliers, and then we'll get into more on this later, but it always helps to have either a bread tie, a zip tie, or even a shotgun shell to help capture that mainspring when we go to remove the hammer and install the new one, but we'll get into more on that later. Now that we've covered all the tools and parts that we need, let's get started.
Now to get to this point to be ready for disassembly, you're going to want to make sure that the recoil spring assembly and the bolt carrier group have all been removed. We're also going to want to make sure that the hammer is in the fired position.
SAFETY REMOVAL [01:30]
Now, our first part that we're going to remove is the safety, to do so, we'll rotate the safety up 90 degrees, so it's pointing towards the sky, and pull it out from the side. We'll set that aside for now and move on to our next step, which will be capturing the mainspring.
CAPTURING THE MAIN SPRING [01:45]
To do this, you're going to need those pliers and that bread tie, zip tie, or shotgun shell I was talking about earlier. To begin we're going to simply grab the spring from the rear, lift it off of the trigger. We're just going to capture it with the hammer. Now be careful, you don't want to bend this spring too much in case you want to use this trigger again, but you may notice on AK-Vs in particular, the MAC bracket may get in your way. So just take your time and make sure that you don't do any damage to the receiver or to the spring itself.
Now that we've got the right side done, we'll go in and grab it from the left, lift it up, and we'll capture it.
Now be careful, this spring is still loaded, and it will bite. So to prevent that, we're going to come in, and we're going to capture it together. We're just going to use our bread tie, twist it around a couple of times. And now we know that spring won't come off.
REMOVING THE RETAINING PIN [02:52]
Now let's get that pin retaining plate out. To do so, we're going to reach in and simply lift it up to release it from the trigger pin. We'll then use our pliers to grab it by that little lip that it has and just lifted up and out. You'll see that it's held in by these two slots. The actual safety is what keeps it in place while it's engaged. So you want to just pull it back and up.
TRIGGER AND HAMMER REMOVAL [03:20]
Now we're ready to remove the trigger and the hammer. To do this most easily, I recommend laying your rifle or pistol flat on a bench with some support underneath it to give it about an inch to two inches of clearance underneath. For our purposes today, and so you can see better, we're going to keep it in the vertical position and just knock these pins out.
To begin, we're going to start with the trigger spring, using our punch we'll just give it a few taps. This'll let the trigger pin come out. And then we can just simply lift the trigger up and out of the receiver. Now we'll move on to the hammer. Same thing. Just give it a few taps and slide it back towards the rear of the receiver. The hammer will pop right. Now, there are a couple of things to understand if you're doing this on an AK-V versus an AK. The MAC bracket will obstruct your hammer a little bit when it goes to come out. So you can't lift straight up. You will need to come back towards the rear of the receiver.
TRIGGER PREASSEMBLY [04:26]
Now, before we get everything back into the gun, we're going to go ahead and get the trigger and the hammer pre-assembled, so they just kind of drop right into the receiver when we're ready to go. We'll start by grabbing the disconnector and the disconnector spring. We'll drop the disconnector spring into this hole right here, located on the bottom of the disconnector. And then we'll take the disconnector and place it into the trigger, lining up the spring with the hole that's inside the trigger. Once those are in place, we'll make sure that the holes for both the disconnector and the trigger lineup, and we'll drop in our trigger sleeve. Turn it over, make sure we have it lined. And we'll make sure that everything's lined up correctly. When it's ready to go into the receiver, it'll look just like this.
Now let's get this hammer together. We're going to simply take it and make sure that the side that strikes the firing pin is facing down. We'll then take the spring with the feet facing down on it as well. Slide the ears of the hammer into the spring. We'll then take the spring and rotate it so that the one portion that goes across it sits in this little neck. We just want it to look like so. Now let's get this spring loaded. To begin, we'll make sure the side that'll strike the firing pin is in our hand, like so facing towards the sky. Now be careful we're going to preload this spring. So once it's on there, it will come around and smack you. We're going to take this side, loop it around and keep pressure on it like so. We'll do the same with this side, loop it around, and capture it. Now we're going to take our bread tie going underneath, we're going to give it a few turns. When it's ready to go back into the receiver, it'll look like this.
INSTALLING THE NEW TRIGGER [06:23]
Now let's get everything back into the firearm, starting with our hammer. We want to make sure that the side that'll strike the firing pin is facing forward. We'll get it into the receiver and just simply slide it into place, giving it a little assistance to make sure that the holes line up with the receiver. We'll take one of our pins, slide it in and capture the hammer itself.
Give it a few taps and make sure that it's seated all the way. Next, we'll move on to our trigger. We'll drop the trigger down into place, making sure that the holes with the trigger sleeve line up with the holes on the receiver.
Once we do, we'll grab the other one of our pins, slide it in and make sure we have it captured. A few taps to make sure it's seated correctly. And now we're ready to move on to our next steps. Grabbing our retaining plate. We'll take it and slide it in down the left-hand side of the receiver to capture the hammer pin and slide it down and in to capture the trigger pin.
Lastly, we'll grab our safety, having it pointed at the sky, we'll slide it in, make sure it's seated and pressed down into the fire position. Now we can come in release our bread tie, making sure that we're careful because this is a loaded spring. We'll pull out the bread tie and using our pliers we can come in, grab the spring and drop it into place.
You do want to make sure that the feet of the spring drop down onto the rear of the trigger, so it looks like so. Now with everything reassembled let's check function.
TRIGGER FUNCTIONS CHECK [08:30]
We'll start by cocking the hammer, keeping hold of it. We'll pull the trigger. Don't let go of the trigger, maintain pressure on it. We're gonna check to make sure it resets. We'll have it locked on the disconnector. Slowly, let out on the trigger, and we'll see that it's captured.
We'll get hold of the hammer again, pull the trigger, and it fires. So we'll charge it one more time. Put it in the safety position, pull the trigger. It does not fire. We've now completed our functions check, and we're ready to get this pistol back together and take it to the range.
