‘Presumed Innocent’ Teaser: Jake Gyllenhaal Stars in Whodunnit Thriller for Apple

Apple TV+ has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Presumed Innocent” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, from Emmy-winning creator David E. Kelley.

Gyllenhaal narrates the trailer as Rusty Sabich, a man seemingly consumed by his love for a woman named Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). “She woke something up inside me,” he says as the footage cuts between his time with her and images of cars and courtrooms and arguments — clearly invoking a darker twist in this alleged romance. Carolyn, it turns out, has been murdered and, given their history, Rusty is the prime suspect.

What the trailer leaves out is extra juicy: Rusty and Carolyn were coworkers and prosecutors, and the suspected crime sends waves through the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office as they mourn a colleague, reel from an affair, and pursue a murder investigation — to say nothing of how it affects Rusty’s marriage and home life.

The rest of the cast includes Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Lily Rabe, Chase Infiniti, Elizabeth Marvel, Nana Mensah, Peter Sarsgaard, Matthew Alan, and Kingston Rumi Southwick. Noma Dumezweni, Gabby Beans, Sarunas J. Jackson, and Roberta Bassin are also set to recur in the series.

Based on Scott Turow’s New York Times bestselling novel, the story was also adapted into a 1990 film starring Harrison Ford and directed by Alan J. Pakula, and a sequel novel titled “Innocent” was published in 2010. Like Apple’s teaser, the novel is told from Rusty’s perspective, laced with the intrigue of an unreliable narrator (and Gyllenhaal’s uniquely sinister charm).

Kelley and J.J. Abrams executive produce the series, under the banners of David E. Kelley Productions and Bad Robot Productions, respectively. It is also executive produced by Gyllenhaal, Dustin Thomason, Ben Stephenson, Matthew Tinker, Sharr White, and Anne Sewitsky; Sewitsky directed the first two episodes, which premiere together, and Episode 8, while Greg Yaitanes directed Episodes 3 through 7 (after the premiere, new episodes will release every Wednesday). It marks the second major spring 2024 release from Kelley, whose Netflix series “A Man in Full,” starring Jeff Daniels, launches May 2.

“Presumed Innocent” premieres June 12 on Apple TV+. Watch the teaser below.
