Here's how you can collaborate with AI experts through internships.
Navigating the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be daunting, but internships offer a unique opportunity to collaborate with AI experts and gain hands-on experience. AI, the simulation of human intelligence in machines, is a rapidly growing field with applications in various industries. By securing an internship in AI, you can work alongside professionals who design and program these intelligent systems. This experience not only allows you to understand the intricacies of machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing but also helps you apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between academia and industry.
Before you dive into applying for internships, it's crucial to research and identify your areas of interest within AI. The field is vast, encompassing specialties like robotics, data analysis, and cognitive computing. Understanding the different branches and their applications will guide you to internships that align with your career goals. This step ensures that you target your efforts effectively and increases your chances of finding a role that excites you and adds value to your professional journey.

One of the single most effective techniques I've seen from students looking to get into internships was to follow this exact playbook: 1. Find a company/product that fits your criteria for working in AI 2. Begin using the product and look for gaps in the solution (e.g. A certain button doesn't work as intended) 3. Leverage the in-app support or the support email to report that information. The more details you can include the better. Bonus points if you can speak towards potential solutions 4. Repeat steps 1-3 to distinguish yourself as a credible problem solver who can push the company's mission forward This is exactly the story for how we hired our very first intern

esearch first means diving deep into the fundamentals and current advancements of AI to build a strong knowledge base before your internship. Familiarize yourself with the key concepts, tools, and methodologies used in AI, as well as any notable projects or publications by the experts you'll be working with. This preparation enables you to approach your internship with confidence, making it easier to understand complex topics and contribute to discussions. Moreover, showing that you've done your homework can impress AI experts, showcasing your dedication and readiness to learn and collaborate effectively.

Your network is your networth. Use LinkedIn effectively and continuously engage with people from companies you are targeting to work for. Learn from them, engage in conversations with them and meet them in the real world, if possible. This network you are building, would definitely help you to gain some support when you need it. Btw, the first conversation when you network with someone should not be - "I am ____ . Do you have an internship in your company?" or I have seen some professionals even texting me - "Check my profile and let me know if there are any suitable internship opportunities in your firm? - which is not the appropriate way to engage. Please research and approach your network with the suitable opportunity.

One important observation from my 20 years of experience in coaching students for interviews and taking interviews for consulting companies - Interviews are not to test your expertise in something. It is to test your foundational knowledge and understanding of what you show as experience. If you are attending AI interviews, please showcase your projects - talk about the impact, challenges faced and lessons you got. Showcase your curiosity to learn from the discussions. Remember, every manager loves to hire a professional who is curious to learn and explore new things. Are you showcasing this in your interview? That is important.

-

-
In addition to AI events, attend networking events in related fields such as data science, machine learning, and robotics. This cross-disciplinary approach can lead to unique opportunities and collaborations that may not be immediately apparent in AI-specific circles. By broadening your networking scope, you increase your chances of discovering innovative internship opportunities and interdisciplinary projects that can significantly enhance your career in AI.
-
A big piece of advice I would recommend is to look small (I know it sounds contradictory(. But look for small startups and new companies founded by AI experts, because even if you are an intern at a small company, you are usually closer to the top Execs than a senior position at a huge company. This way you also get the benefit of working on problems that move the needle, rather than just busy work which is what happens to interns at many large companies.
