How can you fund community organizing without relying on a single donor?
Community organizing is a powerful way to create social change, but it also requires resources and support. If you rely on a single donor or source of funding, you may face challenges such as dependency, instability, or loss of autonomy. How can you fund community organizing without relying on a single donor? Here are some tips and strategies to diversify your income and sustain your work.
One of the most important ways to fund community organizing is to build a base of supporters who share your vision and values. A base is not just a list of contacts, but a network of relationships that can mobilize, advocate, and donate for your cause. You can build a base by engaging people in your community, organizing events and campaigns, and communicating your impact and needs. A strong base can provide you with regular and reliable donations, as well as referrals and connections to other potential donors.

If you are running a nonprofit, your Board is your best bet for your base. Select your board members who are enthusiastic about the cause, but most importantly will serve as your advocates. The board members should have obligations and expectations as part of their understanding of service, whether that is monetary contribution, fellow board colleague recruitment, or volunteer hours. Inactive board members are never helpful for a nonprofit.
Another way to fund community organizing is to apply for grants from foundations, governments, or other organizations that align with your mission and goals. Grants can help you cover specific costs, such as staff salaries, equipment, or travel expenses, or support general operations. However, grants can also be competitive, time-consuming, and restrictive. You should research the grant opportunities carefully, follow the application guidelines, and track the outcomes and reporting requirements. You should also avoid relying on a single grant or funder, and diversify your grant portfolio.

Grants can be a blessing and a challenge. They almost always require a relationship to accompany them - and that takes time. Be ready to reach out to a grant maker by having a stock "Letter of Introduction" at the ready. Something that can be customized easily with very little effort or editing, and on the letterhead of your nonprofit organization. Be sure that whomever is in charge of grant applications is empowered to get the LOI out quickly and with some authority, and has the trust of the organization so that they can move as soon as they are invited to apply.
A third way to fund community organizing is to sell products or services that are related to your work or that showcase your skills and talents. For example, you could sell merchandise, such as T-shirts, mugs, or stickers, that promote your cause or brand. You could also sell services, such as consulting, training, or coaching, that demonstrate your expertise and experience. Selling products or services can help you generate income, raise awareness, and attract new supporters. However, you should also consider the costs, risks, and regulations involved in running a business.

Many corporations which manufacture products are open to price reductions for their products if they know that they are being sold for the benefit of a community. If your nonprofit builds houses, for instance, reach out to the manufacturers for those goods directly. If your community group has an opportunity to re-sell a product as a fundraiser but at costs of a wholesaler, talk to the manufacturer about that. Sending an email to a "community liaison," or "community engagement" professional may be a great first step.
A fourth way to fund community organizing is to launch a crowdfunding campaign online. Crowdfunding is a way of raising money from a large number of people who contribute small amounts through a platform, such as GoFundMe, Kickstarter, or Indiegogo. Crowdfunding can help you reach a wider audience, create a sense of urgency, and offer rewards or incentives to your backers. However, crowdfunding can also be challenging, as you need to set a realistic goal, create a compelling story, and market your campaign effectively.

Crowdfunding cuts both ways - there are so many platforms and causes now, by appealing to a mass audience your cause can sometimes be lost. That said, there are very few other methods that bundle a) an appeal, b) an 'ask,' and c) a method to pay all in one spot. The biggest factor for a nonprofit may be the platform fees. Always be sure that you are getting the lowest fees possible (if any) from your giving / crowdsourcing platform. Donors understand that there is *some* overhead with giving and nonprofit administration...but donors are turned off when they know that their money is going to processing fees rather than the target cause.
A fifth way to fund community organizing is to partner with others who share your vision and values. Partnerships can help you leverage the resources, skills, and networks of other organizations or individuals who support your cause. For example, you could partner with a local business, a media outlet, or a celebrity to sponsor your event, promote your campaign, or endorse your work. You could also partner with other community organizers or groups to collaborate on projects, share costs, or apply for joint grants.

No nonprofit mission is all-encompassing. Nonprofit and governmental partnerships are key to being able to supply benefit and service to niches which a single nonprofit would not otherwise be able to serve. Partnerships can also come in the way of corporate partnerships. Many times, support from corporate donors and partners can come in the form of goods, merchandise, exposure, letters of support, meeting space, etc. It is crucial to build partnerships with compatible (but not identical) entities.
A sixth way to fund community organizing is to seek in-kind support from your community or network. In-kind support is any non-monetary contribution that can help you achieve your goals, such as goods, services, space, or time. For example, you could seek in-kind support from a local printer, a caterer, or a venue to provide you with materials, food, or space for your event. You could also seek in-kind support from volunteers, mentors, or advisors to provide you with skills, knowledge, or guidance for your work.

In-kind support has been instrumental for what we do and we wouldn't exist if we hadn't had access to vital in-kind services. Whilst finding other ways to fundraise is important, do not underestimate the power of in-kind support in being able to move forward with your program / service and how it compliments you on bringing your vision to life! To find in-kind support reach out to your networks or through social media in areas where you are struggling to get support, then organise to meet any companies / organisations / people who you are referred to so you can discuss your project and vision and where you need support over a coffee or formal meeting then see if there is any alignment and opportunities to move forward.

In addition to the strategies mentioned above, there are a few other ways you can fund community organizing without relying on a single donor: 1-Create a membership program where individuals or organizations can become members and contribute a recurring fee or donation. 2-Organize fundraising events such as galas, auctions, or benefit concerts to raise money for your cause. 3-Encourage your supporters to become fundraisers themselves by setting up personal fundraising pages or organizing events on your behalf. diversifying your funding sources is crucial for sustainability. By implementing a mix of these strategies, you can reduce reliance on a single donor and ensure the long-term viability of your community organizing efforts.
