The Digital Strategy Section in the Division of Global Communication & Advocacy is seeking a Social Media Editor to support across a variety of social media editorial tasks for UNICEF’s global social media channels (including but not limited to accounts in English, Spanish, French and Arabic on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, WhatsApp and LinkedIn).

Scope Of Work

Content creation

  • Developing dynamic, interactive, and meaningful social media content for various thematic campaigns as well as daily community engagement on UNICEF’s global channels. This may include, but is not limited to, utilising content from UNICEF offices, WeShare (our digital asset management system), partners and the social media team’s request document.
  • Contribute towards the writing of social media packs, crafting engaging content from key messages.
  • Assist with scheduling social media content.
  • Perform other digital communication and content duties as assigned by the supervisor, including drafting social media copy for the Executive Director’s Twitter account, copy based on Press Releases and statements, and content linked to emergencies.

Community engagement and moderation

  • Monitor and moderate social media channels, flagging risks and opportunities to deepen engagement.
  • Make suggestions for opportunities to improve UNICEF’s presence across digital platforms to deepen engagement with supporters.
  • Track digital content of UNICEF offices, UN agencies and other partners, identifying content to be amplified and shared on UNICEF's platforms.
  • Support in providing analytics reports and provide recommendations on tactics to improve UNICEF’s digital presence.

Social Media Editorial Tasks

  • On a monthly basis, create and set-up Trello boards used by the team for editorial and content planning.
  • On a monthly basis, update the roster and assign editorial tasks to social media team members

Duty Station

  • Remote-based. At least 3 hours of overlap with New York HQ working hours (09:00-17:00) is required.

Travel

  • During the contract period we anticipate up to two instances of travel for key events pending budget confirmation.
  • The Consultant will not be entitled to any separate travel entitlements under the Contract. All expenditure related to the travel plans set out in the Contract are deemed to be covered as per financial proposal. If UNICEF determines that the Consultant unexpectedly needs to travel in addition to the travel already included in the Contract in order to perform the Deliverables, such travel shall be further added through an amendment setting out the additional fee in consideration of the additional travel requirements on the following basis:
    • UNICEF will pay for travel in economy class via the most direct and economical route; provided however that in exceptional circumstances, such as for medical reasons, travel in business class may be approved by UNICEF on a case-by-case basis.
    • UNICEF will reimburse the Consultant for out-of-pocket expenses associated with such travel by paying an amount not exceeding the daily subsistence

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as communications, marketing, journalism or similar.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience developing and executing social media strategies, including creating social media content
  • Proven ability to write flawless, tight social copy in English on constant deadlines
  • Strong copy-editing skills
  • Ability to translate technical and nuanced information into clear, emotional, and engaging content for broad public audiences.
  • Extensive experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, WhatsApp and LinkedIn.
  • Experience using Hootsuite.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Project management experience in a multilingual environment
  • Detail-oriented, creative, able to work efficiently under tight deadlines
  • Good understanding of world affairs, current events and development is highly desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Assessment Criteria (applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria):

Each Proposal will be evaluated against a weight allocation of 80% for the technical proposals and 20% for the commercial proposal. The total maximum obtainable is 100 points. The minimum acceptable technical score is 65. Candidates who score 65 (out of 80) and above will be invited for an assessment.[KP1]

CHILD DATA ROLE

The consultant is expected to interact with children and youth on a daily basis, both in every-day conversations about content creation and community building through email or other official UNICEF channels, such as official social media accounts, and in challenging situations including moderation of comments in organic and paid marketing campaigns.

This includes manipulating or transmitting personal-identifiable information of children (name, location data, photos) for content creation purposes. The successful candidate must have deep understanding of children’s needs or perspectives, putting the necessary child-protection measures in place and have realistic expectations of children when it comes to their participation in UNICEF content and campaigns, establishing clear boundaries, using age-appropriate language and seeking advice when needed.

HEALTH INSURANCE

The Consultant is fully responsible for arranging, at their own expense, such life, health, and other forms of insurance covering the term of the Contract as he or she considers appropriate. The Consultant is not eligible to participate in the life or health insurance schemes available to UNICEF and United Nations staff members.

Visa Requirements

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4.

IMPORTANT – G4 Visa is only valid if the consultant will reside within the tri-state area during the duration of the assignment. It is illegal to apply and obtain a visa for consultants who do not intend to reside within the tri-state area during the duration of the consultancy assignment.

FEE

Requests for services under an individual contract requires that the consultant indicates their all-inclusive fees (including lump sum travel and subsistence costs, as applicable) for the services to be provided.

When submitting their bid, the consultant is also advised to take into consideration as part of their bid for the assignment the cost of health insurance and/or photographic, video-graphic equipment if such equipment is needed to complete the deliverables of the assignment.

Remarks

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and advance to the next stage of the selection process.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
