Network Systems Administrator

Terms of Employment

  • Compensation: $60 - $62K annually
  • 260-days (12 month)
  • This position is Non-Exempt
  • Anticipated start date: July 1, 2024
  • Comprehensive medical, prescription, and dental.
  • This position receives 14 days of paid time off (PTO) and 10 days of vacation annually

Position Summary

Under general direction, troubleshoots, installs, maintains, and supports network communications equipment and related technologies District-wide. Reports to the Director of Information Technology.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree (or two (2) years of college) with a major area of study in Information Technology (IT)-related areas, such as Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, etc. plus three (3) years' of work experience directly related to this position, providing operations and support assistance and troubleshooting for network communications hardware and software, cable plants, and related technologies; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology/computer science, or related degree plus one (1) to three (3) years' of work experience directly related to this position.
  • A valid driver’s license that allows the applicant/employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in Pennsylvania.
  • Passing grade on microcomputer repair simulation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology/computer science, or related degree.
  • Industry certification in network communication technologies, such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of network communications systems.
  • Knowledge of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking technologies and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of desktop computer hardware and software operating systems.
  • Knowledge of network server systems and operations.
  • Knowledge of networked printer configuration and support.
  • Knowledge of cabling, termination, installation, troubleshooting, and repair to include CAT5 and CAT6 technologies.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic cabling, termination, installation, and repair to include single-mode and multi-mode.
  • Knowledge of the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and repair of Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) supporting networking communications equipment.
  • Ability to discuss, understand, and explain technical problems with non-technical customers.
  • Ability to plan complex network communications activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical documentation.
  • Ability to diagnose computer hardware and software malfunctions and initiate repairs.
  • Ability to create, edit, and maintain technical documentation.
  • Ability to make technical presentations to District staff and administrators.
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
  • Excellent problem solving skills with client/server software, PC and networking.
  • Knowledge of microcomputer software packages used in school administration and/or school curriculum.
  • Knowledge of basic School District work policies and guidelines; thorough knowledge of departmental practices and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to exercise judgment as to when to act independently and when to refer situations to an administrator.
  • Ability to read building designs and blueprints as they relate to technology and network requirements.

  • Ability to use various methods, procedures, techniques and program languages used in implementing, maintaining, and fine-tuning hardware, software, communications and databases.
  • Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment (i.e., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school personnel, administrators, students, vendors and/or the general public.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.

Performance Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Demonstrate regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Install, maintain, and update computer network infrastructure and network related services.
  • Allocate and assign hardware/software resources for classroom and administrative computers.
  • Manage the District-wide distribution of computer hardware and software.
  • Manage District telecommunication resources, including installation, configuration, enrollment, password reset, etc.
  • Assist in the selection, implementation and maintenance of hardware and software systems installations and upgrades based on curriculum needs.
  • Maintain competency with respect to network communications equipment.
  • Maintain competency in Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking, including routing, bridging, switching, and wireless technologies and protocols.
  • Maintain competency with respect to network cabling materials and installation specifications and standards.
  • Participate in the development of equipment and operating systems software specifications for new network communications equipment and related technologies.
  • Assist in diagnosing network communications equipment and systems malfunctions and coordinating and/or implementing repair activities.
  • Support all network server peripherals and supporting systems.
  • Work primarily on low risk/impact systems.
  • Provide on-call/remote control assistance and troubleshooting.
  • Perform field support/training at District schools, offices or other locations as needed.
  • Assists in implementing the District’s technology initiatives.
  • Develop internal procedures and program documentation for network services.
  • Review and recommend internal policies relating to information technology.
  • Manage Active Directory.
  • Manage antivirus deployment and virus removal/remediation.
  • Enforce content filter policies.
    • Manages agent assignments through group policy and or System Center.
    • Monitors and reports suspicious search queries.
    • Installs and monitors mobile client technologies.
    • Troubleshoots website HTML source code for proper webpage display.
    • Monitors internal and external bandwidth.
  • Create/clone base Windows images based on currently used PC models.
  • Manage printer installation, configuration, monitoring and reporting.
  • Administer Google Chrome / Chromebook technologies and resources.
  • Configure and deploy Windows terminal services.
  • Performs data archive and recovery procedures daily.
  • Conforms to safety standards as prescribed.
  • Perform related duties consistent with job description and assignment.
  • Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Information Technology.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and/or sit, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds independently. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Low exposure to self to bruises and cuts due to typical work environment.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May be required to work in cramped locations for long periods of time and under stressful conditions. Travel will be required between District facilities using own transportation. May be required to work non-traditional hours based on District needs.

Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare, copy, coordinate and instruct. The employee is frequently required to evaluate, analyze, compute, compile and synthesize.

Evaluation

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of non-licensed personnel.
