SNHU Spotlight: Tamica Matos, BA in Human Services Grad

Tamica Matos ‘23G shared just how important perseverance and dedication were in earning her online Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Human Services with a Substance Abuse Concentration at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).

After undergoing brain surgery, Matos has spent the last 5 years adjusting and learning. She said she not only had to re-learn how to retain information but also how to cope with seeing life in a completely different way. Despite these obstacles, she has continued to move forward and find success.

One key part of that journey was SNHU’s accessibility.

“I was able to listen to a lot of my readings when I had difficulty following along,” said Matos. “I didn’t need to discuss it with accessibility — the things were already in place. And it felt very supportive of my education.”

As a military spouse and mom, Matos appreciated the flexibility of online learning.

“I was able to go back to work, support my husband’s career and my children, while concentrating on my education and doing really well at it,” she said.

A first-generation college student, Matos said graduating sets an important example for her children. She hopes her experience will teach her children about perseverance and the value of structure and education.

“My children now have a place to start — the goal posts have been moved for them — and they watched me accomplish it, which is even more important because now they know what they need to do to excel,” she said.

She also wants to encourage other perspective students to pursue their goals. “Don’t be afraid to take the first step,” she said.

Although pursuing academic goals can be challenging, Matos said the process is enriching. Through time management and dedication, success is possible.

“Don’t give up,” she said. “If I had advice for anyone facing adversity or health challenges, I would say that it is hard but never give up.”
