Person hit and killed by train in Irmo, South Carolina

IRMO, S.C. — One person is dead after being hit by a train near Irmo on Sunday afternoon.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident happened just after 12 p.m. near 1220 Dutch Fork Road, which isn't far from Mill Place Drive. The Richland County Sheriff's Department said that CSX notified law enforcement that they believed one of their trains had hit something on the railway.

Responding deputies determined that the train had hit a pedestrian in the Dutch Fork Road area. 

The resulting crash and investigation also led to railroad crossings at North Royal Tower Drive and Thames Valley Road being blocked. Irmo Police assisted with the case and warned the public of the road closures but didn't elaborate on the cause at the time.

The Richland County Coroner's Office hasn't released the name of the victim.
