COLUMBIA, S.C. — If you are headed out for any weekend plans with the family, pack the rain jacket and umbrella, as periods of showers and thunderstorms are extending into tonight.

While the overall severe weather threat appears limited due to morning shower activity and abundant cloud cover, there remains a potential for strong or severe storms, particularly across the northern Midlands.

The primary threats include strong wind gusts, with some potential for hail.

Rain chances will likely persist into Sunday before cooler and drier conditions settle in for Monday and Tuesday.

Monday will welcome dry conditions dominated by high pressure at the surface. While afternoon highs may reach the upper 70s to low 80s, partly to mostly sunny skies are anticipated.

Looking ahead to the long term, Tuesday through Friday, a weak surface high pressure is set to maintain control until Thursday, when the next frontal boundary is forecasted to approach the region, potentially bringing showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures are expected to remain slightly above normal for the week.
