In 1954, Donald Fry opened a small grocery store in Contra Costa County, in Northern California. The success of the first Fry’s Food store accelerated its expansion, opening new supermarkets.
In 1960, Charles Fry (Donald’s brother) entered the chain store business and expansion outside California began, with a first supermarket in Phoenix.
In 1972, Fry’s Food was acquired by Dillons. In 1985, with the money from the sale, Charles Fry’s sons opened Fry’s Electronics.
