During the Great Depression of 1929, businessman William Thomas Harris opened a pharmacy (Harris Drugs). At the same time Willis L. Teeter opened his grocery store (Teeters Food Mart).
Harris Teeter’s first store opened in 1936 in Charlotte (NC), when Harris and Teeter joined their two businesses. The family business pioneered many modern concepts of today’s supermarkets.
The chain started as a family business and even with their own farm to produce milk and dairy products that they sold in their store.
Sales success and customer service above all allowed the company to grow and move to a larger store in 1946. In addition to food they begin to offer other kinds of household items, medicines, kitchen utensils,…
In 1959 the chain has 6 stores and in the 1960s begins a major expansion and opening more supermarkets in North Carolina.
Today, Harris Teeter is a subsidiary of Kroger, has more than 260 stores in 8 states of the United States. Its headquarters are located in Matthews, North Carolina.
