IGA Supermarkets History
In 1926, a group of 100 independent grocery store owners from Poughkeepsie, NY and Sharon, CT came together to found the Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA).
The objective was to unify and improve the management and distribution of food in the local supermarket chain. The group was a success and by 1927 there were already 150 supermarkets.
Only four years later (1930) more than 8,000 food retail stores were operating under the IGA brand in the United States. Under the private bran IGA supermarkets began to distribute food packaged in cans.
