STOP AND SHOP Supermarkets History
In 1892, Solomon and Jeanie Rabinowitz opened a small grocery store called the Greenie Store, in Boston, MA. In 1914, the Rabinowitz family founded a small chain of grocery stores (Economy Grocery Stores Company) in Somerville, MA.
By 1917, the chain had 15 stores in the greater Boston and Springfield area.
In 1918, the chain of stores focused on the concept of a Moderna supermarket, with many products in the same store and with self-service for customers.

In 1946, the chain reached more than 80 stores and changed its name to the current one: Stop & Shop, Inc. Before the end of the 1960s, Stop and Shop had 100 operating stores.
