Save a Lot was founded in 1977 by Bill Moran in Chahokia, Illinois. Moran’s project was to offer an economical alternative to the large supermarkets of the time.
In the following year, the chain of stores expanded throughout the metropolitan area of Saint Louis and in 1980 reached 30 supermarkets and added 50 more supermarkets in the Mid-South area.

In 1994, Save a Lot was purchased by SuperValu Inc., one of the largest American retail groups. In the following years, Save a Lot expanded by buying other grocery store chains such as Sav U Foods (in California) or Deals in the American Midwest.
In 2016 SuperValu sold Save a Lot to Onex Corporation. Today, Save a Lot Food Stores is owned by several investors, its headquarters are located in St. Ann, Missouri, U.S.A.
