MADISON, Wis. — Public court records show Chandler Halderson has hired a new attorney as he hopes to appeal his conviction and life sentence for killing and dismembering his parents, Bart and Krista.
After being represented by public defenders Catherine Dorl and Crystal Vera during his multi-week homicide trial, Halderson is now being represented by Madison-area criminal defense attorney Michael Edward Covey, according to court records.
Dorl and Vera were withdrawn from the case on Friday, April 22, with Covey taking over on that same date.
Halderson voiced his desire to seek an appeal during his sentencing hearing, asking for attorneys to reach out to him if they were interested in helping him file an appeal. It was the first and only time Halderson spoke publicly since being arrested for his parents’ murders.

“If there are any lawyers listening and willing to take on my appeal, take a moment to please reach out to me,” Halderson read from a written statement during his sentencing. “It’s not that I do not have feelings. It’s that I was warned to not show them due to the scrutiny of this case.”
