WHAT WE'RE TRACKING:

  • ALERT DAY today and Tuesday for Storms
  • Warm through mid-week
  • Cooler End of Week

PLANNING THE NEXT 24 HOURS: Rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected today, where some could be on the stronger side. All severe hazards, including an isolated tornado or two, are possible. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s. The chance for storms will diminish later this evening.

EXTENDED FORECAST: Today and Tuesday are both ALERT DAYS for the possibility of strong to severe storms. A couple of periods of strong storms are possible early this afternoon and again early this evening, with another period of strong storms Tuesday evening and overnight with a cold front. Temperatures will stay warm through the middle of the week, with cooler temperatures (but still comfortable) by next weekend.

Weather News

AP top story

Weather-weary Texas has been hammered again by powerful storms bearing forceful winds that left one person dead, collapsed homes under construction and uprooted trees. In Dallas, the city has opened respite centers where people can get shelter and air conditioning. The high winds were blamed for the collapse of a house under construction Tuesday in the Houston suburb of Magnolia. A 16-year-old construction worker was killed. The storms were a continuation of deadly storms over the Memorial Day weekend, when 24 people were killed in seven states. The potential for heavy rains, localized flash flooding and severe weather continues Wednesday through Oklahoma and Texas.

AP top story

An unusual weather phenomenon called a “gustnado,” which looks like a small tornado but is actually a type of whirlwind kicked up by thunderstorm winds, brought some dramatic moments to a western Michigan lake over the weekend. Video posted on social media shows the gustnado churning across Gun Lake south of Grand Rapids on Sunday, the clouds rolling rapidly as objects fly and people scream. National Weather Service meteorologist Nathan Jeruzal says several gustandoes formed in the area that day. Unlike tornadoes, which begin aloft then descend to the ground, gustnadoes form as small, turbulent pockets of wind in a thunderstorm’s downdrafts, swirling at or near the ground. They rarely cause damage.
