Civil Beat Community Work Day

You’re invited to a Civil Beat community work day hosted by Kauluakalana on Saturday, July 13, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Volunteer alongside Civil Beat editors, reporters, and staff as we spend the day restoring and revitalizing the historic Ulupō heiau in Kailua, Oʻahu. All ages are welcome as there will be a variety of ways to volunteer your time. You will have the option to participate in wet tasks such as weeding loʻi kalo or dry tasks like weeding māla or mulching. Lunch will be provided by Kauluakalana for all volunteers.

Address: 1200 Kailua Road, Kailua HI 96734. We will meet behind/below the Windward YMCA at the base of the historic Ulupō heiau. Parking is available at the YMCA parking lot with overflow parking available at the DayBreak Church.

Accessibility: The top of Ulupō Heiau is easily accessible, however, to get to the base of the heiau requires walking down a steep and bumpy path.

Liability Waiver: We require everyone to complete a liability waiver prior to participating.

What to Bring/Wear:

  • Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Covered shoes/boots/tabis
  • Garden/Work Gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Water bottle (refillable water station available)
  • Mess kit or empty tupperware for lunch

Civil Cafe: Condo Issues

Our next Civil Cafe event will explore the often polarizing issues surrounding condominium association governance and management — and the impacts they have on owners. We’ve invited condo industry experts and advocates to the newsroom to discuss the challenges that condo owners and tenants face. Our panelist line up includes Richard Emery, Lila Mower, Jane Sugimura and Terry Revere. This event will be moderated by senior business reporter Stewart Yerton.

Complimentary coffee and malasadas will be provided.

Sustainable Food Policies in the 2024 Legislative Session

Representative Amy Perruso (District 46) and Daniela Spoto, Hawaii Appleseed’s Director of Food Equity and Anti-Hunger Initiatives will discuss the state of multiple food policies in front of the state legislature that may impact the health, equity, resilience and sustainability of Hawaii and its people.

Presented by The Hawaiʻi Institute for Sustainable Community Food Systems at University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu, Honolulu Civil Beat, UH Better Tomorrow Speaker Series, and Waiwai Collective, this series is meant to generate key opportunities for community dialogue among a diverse audience, aiming to achieve a healthy, equitable, resilient and sustainable food system for Hawaiʻi.

Hawaii Storytellers: Where I Live – Kona and Kohala

This storytelling event will feature community members from the Kona and Kohala side of Hawaii Island, and will take place at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea on Friday, March 8, 2024. The event will be hosted by Civil Beat Editor-At-Large, Naka Nathaniel.

Doors open at 5:00 p.m. where you may register, participate in interactive activities and pre-purchase items at the concession stand. Entertainment provided by Dagan Bernstein will begin at 5:45 p.m. The official storyteller program will begin at 6:00 p.m.

If you can’t make it live, a free recording will be sent to everyone who registers.
