Jennifer Lopez has delivered another hit for Netflix with Atlas, the sci-fi blockbuster where humans go to war against AI. According to Luminate, Atlas was the most streamed movie from May 24-30, with 1.3 billion minutes watched. Only two new films entered this week’s top 10. The crime thriller Colors of Evil: Red came in at No. 2, while Godzilla Minus One debuted at No. 7. 10. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)
A few years after defeating Shredder, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — Leonardo (Pete Ploszek), Donatello (Jeremy Howard), Raphael (Alan Ritchson), and Michelangelo (Noel Fisher) — are still living in the sewers of New York City. April O’Neil (Megan Fox) informs the turtles that Shredder (Brian Tee) is planning an escape from prison with the help of scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and criminals Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE Superstar Sheamus).
The turtles fail to stop the escape after alien warlord Krang (Brad Garrett) intervenes and aids Shredder. Krang plans to open a portal to his world and lead an alien invasion. With the help of April, Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a vigilante named Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), the turtles must step out of the shadows and into the spotlight to save Earth.
9. Thelma the Unicorn (2024)
From the director of Napoleon Dynamite comes the new animated film Thelma the Unicon, a story about a pony with rockstar dreams. Thelma (Grammy Award-winning artist Brittany Howard) is a lowly pony who wants nothing more than to be a music star. One day, a truck accidentally drops glitter on Thelma while she’s wearing a carrot on her head, making her look like a unicorn.
This new appearance attracts a crowd, helping Thelma gain attention for her music. Thelma’s popularity soars to new heights as she begins to live out her dream. However, fame comes at a price, as Thelma grapples with what she’s willing to sacrifice to become a star.
8. Mother of the Bride (2024)
Brooke Shields plays a mother concerned with her daughter’s upcoming marriage in Mother of the Bride. After the death of her husband, Lana (Shields), has dedicated her life to being a great mother to her daughter, Emma (Miranda Cosgrave). Years later, a now-grown-up Emma returns from working abroad to tell Lana about her plans to marry her boyfriend, RJ (Sean Teale). Much to Lana’s surprise, the wedding is one month away in Thailand.
Lana eventually comes around and agrees to support her daughter. However, things get complicated soon after Lana arrives and discovers RJ’s father is Will Jackson (Benjamin Bratt), her ex-boyfriend and the man who broke her heart. Weddings facilitate love, so perhaps rekindling with a former flame is on Lana’s agenda.
7. Godzilla Minus One (2023)
In 1945, Japan is still reeling from the effects of World War II. Kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) returns to the Japanese base at Odo Island, with many of his comrades believing he abandoned his duty. That night, Godzilla attacks the base. Shikishima has a chance to shoot Godzilla but hesitates and is knocked unconscious.
Shikishima learns the next day that he and Sōsaku Tachibana (Munetaka Aoki) are the only survivors. Riddled with guilt, Shikishima sets out to defeat Godzilla and make up for his wrongdoings. On an estimated budget of $10 million, Godzilla Minus One features some of the best visuals of 2023, winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
6. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Thanks to NBCUniversal’s deal with Netflix, one of the biggest titles of 2023 – The Super Mario Bros. Movie – is available to stream. Based on the popular characters from the Nintendo games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an origin story for Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), two Italian-American brothers working as plumbers in Brooklyn, New York.
While fixing a water main leak, the two brothers are sent down the Warp Pipe into two kingdoms. Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom with Princess Peach (Furiosa‘s Anya Taylor-Joy), while Luigi appears in the Dark Lands ruled by Bowser (Jack Black). Mario sets out to find Luigi and save the world from Bowser’s reign. The film also features other notable characters like Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen).
5. A Simple Favor (2018)
Widowed single mother Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) works as a vlogger in Connecticut, sharing her wisdom of domestic life with her followers. Stephanie meets Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), a fashion PR director and fellow mother of a classmate at her son’s school. Emily lives a picturesque life to outsiders. However, Emily confesses that her life is not as glamorous as it appears due to her disappointing husband (Henry Golding) and poor financial situation.
Nonetheless, Stephanie and Emily bond and form a new friendship. One day, Emily asks Stephanie to pick up her son from school. After Stephanie picks the boy up, Emily goes missing and does not return any calls for days. Unwilling to wait patiently, Stephanie takes action and investigates Emily’s disappearance. What she finds will change everything between her and Emily.
4. Madame Web (2024)
For all the wrong reasons, Madame Web is arguably the most talked-about movie of the year. It’s also one of the worst movies of 2024. Is this Spider-Man spinoff legitimately bad, or are there some redeeming qualities? There’s only one way to find out. Dakota Johnson stars as Cassie Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who becomes a clairvoyant after a near-death experience.
With the ability to see into the future, Cassie learns that the villainous Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) haswset out to kill three girls: Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor). Cassie intervenes, saving the three girls, which sparks a deadly showdown with Ezekiel. If you don’t like the movie, at least you’ll find out why “he was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders just before she died.”
3. Shrek (2001)
Shrek is not your ordinary fairy tale. The protagonist is Shrek (Mike Myers), an antisocial ogre who wants to be alone in his swamp. Shrek’s dreams of peace are ruined when Lord Farquaad of Duloc (John Lithgow) banishes fairy-tale creatures to the swamp. Determined to win his swamp back, Shrek cuts a deal with Lord Farquaad. If Shrek rescues Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) so she can be Farquaad’s bride, then Farquaad will move the fairy-tale creatures out of the swamp.
With Donkey (Eddie Murphy) by his side, Shrek travels to the castle to rescue Fiona, where she is being held prisoner by a fire-breathing dragon. Though the mission is successful, Fiona’s dark secret threatens to ruin Shrek’s deal with Farquaad.
2. Colors of Evil: Red (2024)
Colors of Evil: Red starts like most crime thrillers with a dead body. The victim is Monika Bogucka (Zofia Jastrzębska), a bartender whose body washed up on one of Poland’s Tricity beaches. Leopold Bilski (Jakub Gierszał) is assigned to the case. During his initial investigation, Leopold discovers similarities to a cold case from two decades ago, though his boss won’t reopen the matter.
In need of help, Leopold turns to Monika’s mother, Helena (Maja Ostaszewska), a judge whose life is in a downward spiral. The duo’s inquiry lead them to a seaside nightclub with ties to the criminal underworld, which may hold the key to solving the crime.
1. Atlas (2024)
Jennifer Lopez takes on AI in the new sci-fi movie Atlas. Atlas Shepherd (Lopez) is an intelligent data analyst with a severe distrust of artificial intelligence. Atlas is on the hunt for Harlan (Simu Liu), an AI terrorist who led a rebellion nearly 30 years prior that resulted in the deaths of 3 million people. Atlas learns that Harlan has escaped to a planet in the Andromeda Galaxy and joins the mission to find him.
Before a group of soldiers descends to the fugitive’s planet, Harlan launches a drone attack on the ship, resulting in major damage. Atlas must enter a mech-equipped suit run by an AI program, Smith (Gregory James Cohan), to survive. Despite her hesitation, Atlas must team up with AI if she wants to find Harlan and stop the takeover.
