Forecast: Tropical rain possible for Central Texas this week

Here are the latest updates from the KVUE Weather Team.
Heavy rain and flooding possible Wednesday.

AUSTIN, Texas — The workweek begins on a warm and mostly dry note, but rain chances are on the rise for midweek as a disturbance in the the Gulf of Mexico moves toward Texas.

Partial clearing arrives this afternoon, but we'll hold on to a 20% chance for rain as highs climb into the mid-90s.

All eyes are on the Gulf of Mexico this week as the National Hurricane Center has given an area of low pressure a high chance of tropical development within the next couple of days. This system will continue to move north-northwest and impact Mexico and portions of Texas throughout the week. If this system becomes a tropical storm, it will be called Tropical Storm Alberto.

We'll mainly feel impacts in the form of rain as scattered to widespread rain chances arrive Wednesday through early Friday. While it is too far out to determine exact rainfall estimates, forecast models range anywhere from a widespread 1.5 inches to 5 inches, with the highest potential in the Coastal Plains. We'll be monitoring an elevated flood risk Wednesday through Friday.

Because of the combination of rain chances and cloud coverage, our temperatures dip into the lower to mid-80s for the middle of the week. Drier and hotter weather arrives by the weekend as highs return to the 90s.

HIGH: 94

MONDAY NIGHT:
Partly to mostly cloudy. Southeast wind at 5 to 15 mph.
