“I never thought in a million years that this dark, weird, messed up show would have brought in this universal love that it’s received,” said Richard Gadd, the show’s creator and star, in his acceptance speech. He also thanked Netflix, his team and his mom and dad for “messing [him] up enough to make [him] an artist.”
Gadd went on to say, “It’s kind of weird also that a show as messed up as this has gone on to strike a chord with so many people. I think it speaks to the fact that a lot of people in the world are struggling right now. And I don’t know much in the way of advice, but I do know that nothing lasts forever. Shōgun‘s story will continue — and the people behind it have an idea where it goes from here.
FX announced last month that it was developing more seasons of the samurai epic, and co-showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo tell our sister site Variety that they’ve already met with FX president Gina Balian and executive producer Michaela Clavell — the daughter of Shōgun book author James Clavell — and “presented the first kernels of, ‘We’re not sure we should do this, but if we did, here’s how we thought it might start.’ And we gave them that scene, and...

Hiroyuki Sanada is rumored to be a part of Ghost of Tshumia’s film adaptation. The news of a film adaptation of the game was first released in 2021, and no further information has been shared so far. Chad Stahelski will be directing the adaptation and Sanada will be playing one of the prominent characters in the film.
A still from Ghost of Tsushima
Hiroyuki Sanada was most recently seen in the critically acclaimed Japanese drama, Shogun, where he played the role of Yoshi Toranaga. He is anticipated to play the role of Lord Shimura in the game but nothing is confirmed as of now. However, Sanada’s involvement with the film is attracting negative reactions from fans. They feel that Sanada has become a stereotype casting option for any film/TV show set in Japan.

On the day we taped this “Shōgun” interview, with series creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, the news broke that the FX show, previously billed as a limited series, might continue for more seasons after all. Since then, FX has officially announced that Marks and Kondo — along with the estate of author James Clavell, whose blockbuster 1975 novel provided the source material for what we can now call Season 1 of “Shōgun” — are developing a potential plan to go past the story of the book, and tell the further tales of Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada).
After the hard-won triumph that is “Shōgun,” the decision makes sense. And though there isn’t more of Clavell’s writing on which to base new material, Toranaga is modeled after the historical figure Tokugawa Ieyas, the Japanese warlord who stabilized Japan, beginning in 1600 when “Shōgun” is set.

Sony‘s upcoming Ghosts of Tsushima adaptation could get some serious star power as rumors swirl about Shōgun actor Hiroyuki Sanada joining the cast. According to industry leaker @DanielRPK, Sanada is in talks to join the cast of the Chad Stahelski-directed action film with a screenplay by Takashi Doscher. While there’s no indication of who Sanada would play in the live-action movie, fans suspect Sanada could play Lord Shimura, the uncle of the game’s protagonist, Jin Sakai.
While this is not a confirmation of Hiroyuki Sanada’s involvement in the Ghosts of Tsushima movie, it wouldn’t be the first time the Japanese actor teamed up with Chad Stahelski for an action showcase of epic proportion. Sanda played Koji Shimazu, the manager of the Osaka branch of the Continental Hotel, in Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4. Ghost of Tsushima had the perfect balance between gameplay and narrative in the video game format and producers believe it is fit for a live-action adaptation. Chad Stahelski will serve as the director and once mentioned his ideal cast to be purely Japanese for authenticity.
There are plenty of talented actors around and one in particular has been on the radar of the fans since the announcement. Hiroyuki Sanada starred in several samurai films and even worked with the director at one point which could pave the way for a role in the upcoming movie.

The critically acclaimed series Shogun is on the brink of securing a second season at FX, with star Hiroyuki Sanada confirming his return as Lord Toranaga. This exciting news comes amidst much speculation about the show’s future direction, especially after the dramatic and intense conclusion of season one. Challenges Without Key Characters While the prospect of new episodes is thrilling, Shogun faces notable challenges without key figures like Anna Sawai’s Mariko. John Blackthorne, played by Cosmo Jarvis, and Lord Toranaga will undoubtedly carry much of the narrative forward. Reflecting on James Clavell’s original work, FX chairman John Landgraf noted, It’s...

In the week since our 2024 Emmy predictions center expanded to include the guest acting categories, a strong consensus has formed around four potential winners from three different series. The one show that is expected to achieve double victories in this area is FX’s “The Bear,” which won’t have much trouble doing so if our users are correct about it taking up seven of the possible 12 comedy guest nomination slots.
The widely predicted guest winners from “The Bear” are Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis, the former of whom was just nominated last year for the show’s inaugural season. The likeliest drama guest victors are potential Emmy first-timer Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”) and 2021 champ Claire Foy (“The Crown”). Foy would be only the third actress to win twice in her category for one role, after Patricia Clarkson (“Six Feet Under”) and Margo Martindale (“The Americans”).

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

Even three decades after Speed‘s release, Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves remain one of the most adored onscreen duos, and it’s not surprising to see why. Not only were they impeccable in their respective roles, but the chemistry between the two was also off the charts. While the duo never dated in real life, years later, both actors confessed to having crushes on each other.
It’s not hard to see why it didn’t take long for the two to develop a sincere bond after crossing paths in Speed, as apart from being two of the kindest stars in showbiz, they also share a difficult past.

American films and television invariably brush up against the issue of language. Since these stories are made for mass appeal — and said mass is English-speaking audiences — the films will depict characters speaking English even if that shouldn't be the case. Take films set during Roman times like "Spartacus" or "Gladiator," which have dialogue spoken only in English, not Latin or even a closer modern stand-in like Italian.
Then there are films with characters from different countries, yet the audience hears them all speaking the same tongue. Some handle this more cleverly than others; in "The Hunt for Red October," the Soviet characters are first heard speaking Russian before a quick switch to English -- letting the audience know while they're hearing English, the characters are hearing Russian.
"Shōgun," which recently went from mini-series to a two-season renewal, makes no attempt to hold its audience's hand. Set in 1600 Japan, Lord Yoshii...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess drama, now with “Shōgun.”
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we went from having no clear frontrunner in the Best Drama Series category to what seems like a runway favorite. Last week, FX finally announced “Shōgun” will compete as a drama series as two additional seasons are being planned for… sometime in the future. Good for Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo and producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada. Not only will they get paid for spearheading the year’s one real breakout show not named “Baby Reindeer,” but they’re also more likely than ever to win Emmys for their work. “I’ve never done any project that was even remotely close to the Japanese culture, so that’s why this project actually was definitely a treat for me,” says Carlos Rosario about how familiar he was sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Japanese culture before taking on the costume design for FX’s “Shōgun.” His research process for the epic series began with “the paintings of that period, because that was the only reliable source that would really tell us about this period of transition.” He and his team ultimately ended up with “a 1,000-page book of research” into the “complex world” of the show. This article contains spoilers for "Shōgun."
It already feels safe to say that FX's "Shōgun'' is the TV breakout of 2024. FX, noticing the comparisons of "Shōgun" to "Game of Thrones," has concluded they have a golden goose and picked up the limited series for two more seasons.
"Shōgun" is set in Japan during the year 1600. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) gains an ally in John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a shipwrecked European sailor. Blackthorne came to Japan to ensure the Portuguese didn't seize the island nation before his homeland England could get a trading foothold. When he arrives, he doesn't speak a word of his new companions' language.
One of the first Japanese words that Blackthorne learns is "Teki" — "Enemy." I remember as I watched the scene, I recognized the word myself. I don't speak Japanese, but I have picked up a few words from watching many different anime series.

The eight-seasons-long Game of Thrones series is widely regarded as one of the most popular and successful novel-based adaptations of all time, with writer cum producer David Benioff credited as one of the show’s executive producers, showrunners, and writers. But while most of the saga was a masterpiece, they somehow managed to mess up the series finale, which didn’t sit well with fans.

That being said, infuriated fans still blame Benioff and D.B. However, many don’t seem to realize that this story also has an unexplored perspective they never really came to know.

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
In “Shōgun,” Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano) is a man playing both sides and one side at once. The wily lord swears his allegiance to two masters: lords Ishido (Takehiro Hira) and Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), the feuding members of Japan’s council of regents. When it appears the odds favor Ishido, Yabushige sides with him. When the tide turns back to Toranaga, Yabushige is happy to let the current sweep him away. So really, when it comes down to it, the Lord of Izu is only loyal to a single person: himself.
It’s fitting then, when asked for his favorite scene in “Shōgun,” that the actor bringing Yabushige to such shifty, spirited life zeroes in on a moment that reflects his character’s self-interests.

FX and Hulu’s historical drama Shogun premiered on February 27, 2024 and did the seemingly impossible. Throughout the years, many shows have tried to claim the title of “the new Game of Thrones,” but Shogun became the first title to actually pull off such an ambition, unanimously dubbed as such by many fans and critics alike.
This year’s sensation just received a promising but also scary update: it might just extend far beyond the original mini-series. Here’s what we know so far.
Shogun Seasons 2 & 3 Are In the Works
FX is teaming up with original novel writer James Clavell’s family to continue Shogun beyond Season 1 — which was supposed to be the only one. A team of writers has been assembled to pen out the scripts of not one but two more seasons. Bold move.
For now, “in the works” means very early pre-production: the writing process is yet to be started,...

Based on the eponymous 1975 novel by James Clavell, FX’s and Hulu’s Shōgun became an absolute hit. Everyone knows that the series ended recently and that initial reports told that the series would not be renewed because they did not have a good story at the time, but we have recently reported that a second season was, indeed, in the works at FX, which made a lot of fans happy. But, we have even more good news for you at this point, as not only is a second season in the works, but according to the information provided by The Hollywood Reporter, a third season of Shōgun is also in the works at FX!
As you might know, the series wasn’t the first adaptation of Clavell’s novel, but the Shōgun series fully surpassed the 1980 series and became a critical and commercial success, both in the West and in Japan.

The John Wick franchise has, in addition to Keanu Reeves’ titular character, given fans multiple stellar characters to be nostalgic about. While the latest iteration ended with Wick seemingly dying at the steps of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, Donnie Yen’s character has recently received a spinoff, which is set to continue the story of Caine.
Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 4. | Lionsgate
Yen played a blind assassin in John Wick: Chapter 4, with the spinoff expected to delve into his story following the events of the movie. Regardless, the actor also played an equally memorable role in the 206-released Rogue One, the first installment of the Star Wars anthology series. The movie saw Yen play another badass blind character in the form of Chirrut Imwe, a warrior who believes in the force, and arguably deserves his own spinoff, just like John Wick’s Caine.

No surprise here: more episodes of “Shōgun” are on the way. FX and streaming partner Hulu announced yesterday that they’ll renew their hit limited series for two more seasons. Star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada also returns, as do co-creators, writers, and executive producers Justin Marks and Rachel Condo, as well as EP Michaela Clavell. And “Shōgun” author James Clavell also returns to develop both upcoming seasons, too; so creatively speaking, everyone is back, which is good news for the show’s fans.

Boasting stunning cinematography, detailed character work, and an intricately layered plot that gets deep into the fog of war, FX's sweeping, feudal Japan-set epic Shōgun has been one of the great limited series of 2024. Or at least it was — because now it is a limited series no more! As reported by Deadline, the critically acclaimed adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 Asia Saga novel is set to return for Season 2 and 3 (and possibly more).
With reports emerging last week that series star Hiroyuki Sanada had inked a deal to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, and the show gearing up for a big Emmys campaign in the Drama rather than Limited series categories, news of the historical epic's renewal comes as no surprise. Also unsurprising to learn is that, as well as Sanada's commitment to the show's future, series co-creators and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo — as well as...

Even months before its release, Hiroyuki Sanada’s latest series was already garnering massive anticipation from fans. And, needless to say, as soon as it hit the screens, Shōgun didn’t hesitate to immaculately deliver to all of those expectations and do justice to the source material, becoming one of the biggest talks of the entire world and an internet sensation overnight.

However, that just might be about to change following recent reports about the series getting a second and third season greenlit by FX and being led by Sanada. Unarguably enough, that sounds just like what happened with Game of Thrones — i.e. the very saga Sanada’s series was being widely compared with — and things don’t seem to be looking all too good because of that.

Fans of the popular FX show Shōgun, get ready because if everything works out, you may get two more seasons. But they are moving forward with the creative team behind the first season, including co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, executive producer Michaela Clavell, and producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada. The estate of Shōgun’s author, James Clavell, is also on board.
Sanada has reportedly signed a deal for the second season if it is renewed. However, it has not officially been renewed at this time.
Shōgun was the most popular show on FX by hours watched, but it was also the most expensive show FX has produced. Now the ten-episode series is also available on Hulu.
Given how popular the show was and that FX reportedly submitted the series for Emmy consideration in the “drama” category instead of “limited series.” If they did, it likely means they are serious about another season.

“Shōgun” is officially in the drama race for the Primetime Emmys.
FX has confirmed that the once limited or anthology series heavyweight has been officially submitted and accepted in the drama categories, where it will compete against Netflix’s “The Crown,” Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Prime Video’s “Fallout.” In addition, the network has shared exclusively with Variety the complete list of 40 Emmy submissions, which includes six submissions for directing, four for writing, and two eligible guest actors. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” currently holds the record for most nominations in a single year with 32. Could FX break the monumental record?

Limited no more? ? Shōgun, FX’s remake of the 1980 miniseries and one of the best television shows of 2024 so far, will potentially return for two more seasons.
The show — like its TV predecessor, also based on the James Clavell novel — was originally supposed to be a limited series. However, over the course of 10 episodes, Shōgun became FX’s most-watched show ever when paired with its Hulu streaming release, opening the door for a return to 16th century Japan.

For now, FX and streaming partner Hulu are saying that they are working with the estate of Shōgun author James Clavell to to develop two additional seasons.
There is no mention of a green light, and a start date for production has not been set, but a writers’ room is being assembled and will begin this summer. More seasons of “Shōgun” are (maybe) on the way.
Variety has learned that FX, Hulu and the estate of James Clavell — who authored the novel on which “Shōgun” is based — are working to develop more seasons of the critically acclaimed series. A writers’ room will begin this summer to develop two more seasons of the show.
It must be noted that this is not a formal renewal, and no production has been scheduled for more episodes. Series co-creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo remain onboard the series, as does executive producer Michaela Clavell of the James Clavell estate, as well as series star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada.
It was previously reported that a second season of the historical drama was being eyed by FX following the success of Season 1. Sources said that FX was mulling entering the show into the drama series category for the Emmys rather than limited series,...

It’s official: FX and Hulu are prepping not one but two more seasons of breakout drama Shōgun.
The Disney-owned network said Thursday that it is teaming with the estate of author James Clavell to extend Shōgun for two additional seasons. The company noted that both seasons are in development, meaning that a two-season renewal depends on how the creative comes in.
A writers room is being assembled and will open in the summer to explore a continuation of Shōgun beyond Clavell’s original novel. Shōgun’s creatives, including co-creators, exec producers and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, exec producer Michaela Clavell as well as star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada are all involved with the development.
Shōgun, which wrapped its season in late April, ranks as FX’s most-watched show ever (based on global hours streamed). The 10-episode first season is available now to binge on Hulu.

What would benefit from a “Shōgun”-less limited field? And what would be hurt by a “Shōgun”-filled drama field? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the FX series’ possible category shift, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s” return without the Mr. and Mrs. Smith we know (probably) and more.
Speculation has crescendoed in the past week about “Shōgun” moving from limited to drama, capped off by the report that Hiroyuki Sanada has inked a new deal to reprise his role as Toranaga in a possible second season. FX has not confirmed or denied, but the pieces are coming together for a renewal. If it does go drama, the show would easily become the Best Drama Series favorite, which means we could have a second year in a row of three shows dominating the three genres with “Shōgun” in drama, “The Bear” in comedy and “Baby Reindeer” in limited.

John Wick is undeniably one of the most successful franchises by director Chad Stahelski, and a major milestone for Keanu Reeves as well who is so loved in the role that fans can’t imagine anyone else as the titular character besides him. However, even before the first movie’s launch, someone had brutally negative thoughts and predictions on how it would turn out to be.
John Wick.
Surprisingly enough, this someone was none other than the mastermind Stahelski himself, who even predicted that the film would be such a massive failure that it would go “straight to video.” But what’s even more stunning than the filmmaker’s own predictions on his blockbuster saga was the fact that Reeves was never supposed to lead the franchise the way he ended up doing!

Could the John Wick universe be poised to introduce an assassin even more formidable than the legendary Baba Yaga (Keanu Reeves) himself? Well, it seems the possibility is high since the acclaimed action franchise is expanding again with Donnie Yen’s enigmatic character, Caine, the blind master of lethality. For the unversed, he was introduced to us in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

Donnie Yen isn’t done with his role as the blind assassin Caine from John Wick: Chapter 4 quite yet.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the veteran Hong Kong action star will return in a spinoff picking up with his character being freed of his obligations to the High Table after the final events of John Wick 4.
“Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience. The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive, and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion,” Yen said in a statement. “Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”

The "John Wick" universe is continuing to expand, with or without Keanu Reeves. Lionsgate has announced that a new spin-off set within the world of the beloved action franchise is on the way. This one will focus on Donnie Yen's blind assassin character Caine, who was introduced in last year's "John Wick: Chapter 4." While much about the film remains under wraps for the time being, it will pay off a subplot that was previously teased by director Chad Stahelski.
According to Variety, Yen will star in the currently untitled spin-off film, with Robert Askins ("The Umbrella Academy") set to pen the screenplay. Production is due to begin next year in Hong Kong. The world of “John Wick” is expanding even more.
Donnie Yen’s blind assassin Caine, who was introduced in last year’s “John Wick: Chapter 4,” will be the center of a new spinoff.
There are no other details yet, but the spinoff will “continue Yen’s story arc following the events of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table,” according to Lionsgate.
Robert Askins, who’s written for Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” AMC’s “The Son” and received a 2015 Tony nomination for his play “Hand to God,” is writing the screenplay. Lionsgate will begin production on the untitled movie next year in Hong Kong.
The Caine spinoff is developed through “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski’s development deal with Lionsgate to oversee the action franchise. Stahelski will produce through his 87Eleven Entertainment along with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.
