“If,” a fantasy-comedy from director John Krasinski and star Ryan Reynolds, looks to collect a promising $40 million in its box office debut.
Based on projections, “If” — short for imaginary friends — is tracking to land at least $35 million and as much as $45 million from 4,000 North American theaters. At the higher end of estimates, those ticket sales would mark a solid start for a live-action PG family film that’s not based on an existing property. But the movie cost $110 million, so it’ll need to resonate globally to justify its price tag. Ahead of its domestic release, “If” opened last weekend in two overseas markets, France and Belgium, where it’s earned $3.7 million to date. It lands this week in 56 additional international territories.
Krasinski wrote, directed and stars in “If,” which follows neighbors Cal and Bea (Reynolds and Cailey Fleming) with the ability to see other people’s imaginary friends. While...

The drama revolves around an FBI agent (Mackie) and a career criminal (Dornan), who play a cat-and-mouse game across Europe.
Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble (Silent Witness, Wild Bill) created and wrote the series. The duo will exec produce alongside Kari Skogland (Falcon and the Winter Soldier), who will direct the pilot.

Dog toys and roving Regency-era balls. Small-artisan hand-etched mirrors and allergy medicine. “Bridgerton” has become so much more than a TV show. Heading into Season 3 of Shonda Rhimes’ massively popular period romance series, Netflix has found that viewers aren’t just invested in the love story of new leading couple Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) — they want to invest in the brand itself.
That means a fandom spending its dollars on a growing merch and events business that helps them celebrate each new season of the show, which is based on Julia Quinn’s romance novels.

When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.
“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
And over nearly 70 films, that openness has kept Karpen and his small but mighty staff in the game. While Bleecker is celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of its competitors haven’t managed to survive in a business that’s only become more treacherous to navigate. Several of Bleecker’s contemporaries,...

The only debut feature world premiering in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, “Wild Diamond” is poised to be a highlight of this year’s roster. In the film, promising French director Agathe Riedinger tackles timely themes such as the hyper-sexualization of women and rape culture through the story of Liane, a 19-year old woman from a broken family whose dream is to take part in a reality show called “Miracle Island.” The movie expands on “Waiting for Jupiter,” Riedinger’s critically acclaimed 2018 short.
The long-gestating “Wild Diamond” is produced by Priscilla Bertin and Judith Nora at Paris-based Silex Films and is represented in international markets by Pyramide International. Ahead of the movie’s world premiere, Riedinger discussed the genesis of the project and her own fascination with reality TV, as well as her process for casting and working with talented non-professionals such as Malou Khebizi, who is in nearly every frame of the movie.

And she’s suing Instacart for negligent hiring, supervision and retention and negligent misrepresentation.
She is seeking $25,000 in damages, though the full amount will be determined in court.
The suit alleges that Reid, who delivered groceries under the name “Merle” with a photo depicting an older woman, used a false identity while delivering groceries, with Harmon having “no idea” she was communicating with “a tall and intimidating younger man.”

On May 7, many elite, A-list celebrities descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for the annual Met Gala, the star-studded fashion extravaganza and most important red carpet (this year, green and white) event of the year. Online coverage of the glitzy affair always blankets media coverage as fans pore over each gown’s details.
But this year, dozens of pro-Palestine protesters were arrested a block away while marching toward the event. And for those closely watching the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and Gaza’s harrowing devastation — as the death toll topped 35,000 (many of which are women and children) — the Met affair led some online critics to launch the #Blockout2024 movement, which this week is gaining traction.

Upfront week’s reliance on films isn’t actually new but it is increasingly bizarre, as evidenced by the top of Wednesday morning’s Warner Bros. Discovery presentation kicking off with sizzle that prioritized features Furiosa, Dune: Part Two and Wonka — when new episodes of the HBO and Max’s flagship Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, are just weeks away.
But the opening frames proved to be relatively misleading, as the 90-minute (notably David Zaslav free) pitch to advertisers focused almost exclusively on … advertising. And on linear TV, at that. Film was referenced, of course, but as a vehicle to get Procter & Gamble’s Olay in on the Barbie phenomenon. Ad sales execs literally offered up James Gunn’s first project of the new DC era to the room full of media buyers, asking who wants sponsorship deals ahead of its planned 2025 release: “Do you want to be in Superman?...

Lionsgate is developing a John Wick spinoff movie around Donnie Yen’s Caine assassin character.
Yen will reprise his John Wick: Chapter 4 role in the untitled project set to shoot in Hong Kong in 2025. The franchise expanding film, with no director yet announced, will follow the events of John Wick 4 as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
The project also follows Yen, a veteran Hong Kong action hero, pushing back against what he claimed were Asian stereotypes in the original script for John Wick 4. After some prodding, John Wick 4 director Chad Stahelski agreed to change the name and clothes for Yen’s character.
China-born Yen is a household name internationally thanks to his hugely popular and acclaimed Ip Man movie series, and he has crossed over to Hollywood with outings in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which grossed over a billion dollars,...

The world of “John Wick” is expanding even more.
Donnie Yen’s blind assassin Caine, who was introduced in last year’s “John Wick: Chapter 4,” will be the center of a new spinoff.
There are no other details yet, but the spinoff will “continue Yen’s story arc following the events of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table,” according to Lionsgate.
Robert Askins, who’s written for Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” AMC’s “The Son” and received a 2015 Tony nomination for his play “Hand to God,” is writing the screenplay. Lionsgate will begin production on the untitled movie next year in Hong Kong.
The Caine spinoff is developed through “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski’s development deal with Lionsgate to oversee the action franchise. Stahelski will produce through his 87Eleven Entertainment along with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.

“Are you happily married?” “Were you married off way too young?” “Are girls not allowed to love?” Few people dare to ask similar questions in southern Egypt – except for the all-female street theater troupe in remote Barsha village.

Perhaps no one captured cultural life post-World War II more vividly than Richard Avedon. From pop icons to artists to heads of state, being photographed by Avedon meant you were someone. There must have been something disarming about Avedon, who first came to prominence with his work for Harper’s Bazaar, because even though so many of his subjects were celebrities, he invariably revealed a more vulnerable, less guarded side of the people he photographed.

Netflix is ready to tee off with Will Ferrell.
In his first scripted TV comedy series, Ferrell will star in a scripted comedy series titled Golf. The streamer has picked up 10 episodes of the series, which is co-created by Ferrell, Ramy Youssef — who will also have an onscreen role — and Josh Rabinowitz (Babes, Ramy, The Carmichael Show).
In Golf, Ferrell will play a fictional golf legend. Details on Youssef’s part are being kept under wraps though sources say the show isn’t a two-hander. (Netflix also stresses that Golf should be capitalized, though it’s unclear if it’s an acronym.)

When Francis Ford Coppola arrived in Cannes in 1979 to premiere an unfinished version of “Apocalypse Now,” he had endured a gauntlet of bad press. His Vietnam saga’s budget kept ballooning, forcing Coppola to offer his car, his home, even the profits from “The Godfather” as collateral to cover overages. The production was biblically plagued — its original star Harvey Keitel was fired days into shooting, his replacement, Martin Sheen, suffered a near-fatal heart attack, a typhoon destroyed much of the set and a shoot intended to last six weeks stretched over 16 months. To the chattering classes, “Apocalypse Now” had all the makings of a cinematic catastrophe. It turned out to be quite the opposite.
In a press conference at Cannes, Coppola was blunt: “There were too many of us. We had access to too much money, too much equipment, and, little by little, we went insane.”

[This story contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Doctor Who‘s new season, “Space Babies” and “The Devil’s Chord.”]
BBC’s science-fiction powerhouse Doctor Who has launched its new season starring Ncuti Gatwa (Barbie, Sex Education) across the world on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere.
Showrunner Russell T Davies first performed the unenviable task of bringing the series back to the small screen in 2005, with actor Christopher Eccleston (HBO’s The Leftovers) in the lead role and launching it to new heights with almost 14 million viewers tuning in from the U.K alone.
Davies then left his showrunning duties in 2009, handing the franchise over to Sherlock’s Steven Moffat. But he returned for four specials celebrating Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary in 2023. And with it, he brought Gatwa to the role of the Time Lord.
The Hollywood Reporter published the first part to this interview ahead of Doctor Who‘s Disney+ launch. Now, Davies digs into spoilers from the first two episodes,...

European TV production giant Banijay (Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, MasterChef, Survivor) reported lower first-quarter 2024 revenue, Amsterdam stock exchange-listed parent company Fl Entertainment Group disclosed on Wednesday. The parent also unveiled a rebranding that changes its name to Banijay Group, effective immediately.
The total rebranded Banijay Group’s quarterly revenue hit $1.0 billion euro ($1.1 billion), up 10.6 percent over the year-ago period. But content production revenue was down 2.3 percent assuming constant currencies, and distribution revenue was down 12.5 percent on the same basis at the company’s Paris-headquartered powerhouse Banijay media and entertainment business, led by CEO Marco Bassetti and chairman Stéphane Courbit. Including live experiences division Banijay Live, revenue here was up 3.1 percent, “reflecting amplified seasonality of major scripted show deliveries and revenue recognition towards fourth quarter 2024 compared to 2023.”
Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) for the total group jumped 11.2 percent to 164 million euro ($178 million).

The inaugural San Quentin Film Festival — the first film festival to be held inside a prison — will take place Oct. 10, 2024 at the maximum security correctional facility located near San Francisco.
The one-day event, designed to spark collaboration between incarcerated people and the entertainment industry, will include a screening of A24’s Sing Sing, which stars Colman Domingo and a cast of formerly incarcerated actors. The festival will include both new feature films that depict the prison experience and short films made by incarcerated filmmakers.
While he was incarcerated at San Quentin, festival co-director Rahsaan Thomas directed a short documentary, Friendly Signs, which screened at this year’s Atlanta Film Festival. “I learned to become a filmmaker while I was incarcerated, using donated equipment,” said Thomas, who is co-host and producer of the award-winning Ear Hustle podcast. “My experience happened through opportunities that rarely come to incarcerated people.
