Earlier this year, it was reported that Will Smith will continue his career damage control with a rare venture into indie territory with the action thriller Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.” With the film being put up at the European Film Market, which predominantly puts smaller films on display, the $80 million price tag makes the Will Smith vehicle the biggest movie at the show.
As the Cannes market event approaches, Deadline is reporting that Smith’s Westbrook Studios and AGC Studios have tapped Italian director Stefano Sollima to sit in the director’s seat for the vigilante thriller. Sollima is no stranger to dark crime content as he has also helmed films like Sicario: Day of the Soldado,...

Action thriller Sugar Bandits will star Will Smith, while Sicario: Day Of The Soldado filmmaker Stefano Sollima will direct.
Will Smith is mere weeks away from appearing in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, the latest chapter in an action-thriller series that has been going for almost 30 years.
Meanwhile, Smith has another action-y movie in the works. Called Sugar Bandits, it’s said to be a “big-budget action-thriller” written by Chuck Hogan, who previously wrote The Strain with Guillermo Del Toro and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, directed by Michael Bay.
According to Deadline, which first reported on the project, Sugar Bandits will have Smith play “a former special forces soldier who runs an elite vigilante squad working to wipe out the drug trade in Boston.”

Deep Fear, not to be confused with last year’s film about monsters under the streets of Paris (which is probably why they added the “Sharks vs Narcs” subtitle to the film for its digital release), is a call back to the shark films of the past. Not to Jaws or its imitators but to something earlier, like Shark!, Shark’s Treasure, and The Deep where the sharks were a secondary plot element, an added threat for the protagonists to face in addition to other humans.
In the case of Deep Fear that would be Naomi whom we first see showing her co-worker Barney how easily a reef shark can be steered away from people. When she surfaces her partner Jackson that he’s booked another tour.

Hollywood action films set in the Middle East cover a considerable portion of the present action genre. America’s thirst for glory has no bounds, and the way it uses such movies as a tool of hegemony is rather lucid if one is looking for it. Some of you might be wondering where I’m headed with this, but all I’m saying is that in all these movies, America becomes a beacon of hope, valor, sacrifice, and “worth” (pun intended if you remember how Captain America lifted Thor’s hammer in Avengers: Endgame). Anyway, coming back to the topic, here are five movies like Kandahar that you can watch. Although there are many, the list I’ve made is based on the first few names that came to mind that I’ve seen and liked. To make the list shorter, all these movies are based in the Middle East...

If you've ever watched the red carpet at the Academy Awards there's a phrase you've probably heard over and over again, and for quite a few decades: "It's an honor just to be nominated."
And to be fair, it most certainly is. Although the Oscars were invented to bust unions, not reward artistic quality, at their best it's a gesture of support for a filmmaker from their peers. To be singled out by the other hard-working artisans in your branch as worthy of awards consideration as an actor, director, writer, cinematographer, sound designer et al is a great big feather in one's cap.
But it's a feather that can, and has been, plucked out. It's uncommon but the Academy Awards have vetoed quite a few nominations in the past — three times in the 2010s alone — in situations that stirred up controversy or, in some of the more technical or niche categories,...

Martini’s character is a vice cop in the LAPD. Detective Don Ellis is “intelligent and fierce, and not above getting down and dirty with the criminals he polices to get the job done,” according to Deadline, which reported the casting news.
Ellis is a character in author Michael Connelly’s 18th Harry Bosch novel, The Crossing. Bosch: Legacy Season 2 will draw from that book. It follows former LAPD detective Harry Bosch – now working as a Pi – as he teams up to investigate the case of a man who may have been wrongly accused of murder. Bosch’s investigation soon leads right to the heart of the police department.

Update: The Instagram post shared on the “To Leslie” account has been removed.
The movie awards industry is buzzing following the news that the Academy is “conducting a review of campaign procedures” after Andrea Riseborough received a surprise best actress Oscar nomination for the independent drama “To Leslie.”
The “grassroots” campaign enlisted numerous famous names to help spread the word about the small indie, but did that break any rules or just smartly play the awards game?
Celebrity influencers aside, an Instagram post on the “To Leslie” page may have violated the Academy’s rules and guidelines.
In a post dated two weeks ago, the official Instagram account for “To Leslie” quoted Richard Roeper’s blurb from his top 10 films of 2022 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, where he listed the movie at no. 5. The quote reads: “As much as I admired Blanchett’s work in ‘Tár,’ my favorite performance by...

John Krasinski currently stars as the lead in Jack Ryan. The famous actor and director rose in popularity following his role in The Office. He eventually got the part of Jim after a rocky audition process, and he left his side job.
Before The Office aired, Krasinski was waiting tables. However, he would only work for short periods each time he was at a restaurant. The actor revealed that the managers fired him nine times.
John Krasinski’s career after ‘The Office’
Krasinski starred in The Office for many years, and he continued to find success after the series ended. He made minor appearances in a few shows and acted in films like 13 Hours.

After a rocky start in the U.S., the American version of The Office has remained a cultural juggernaut. Not only did the series continue to improve the model for the mockumentary format that is still popular in series such as Abbott Elementary, but it also continues to find new fans, who catch up with the show on streaming services long after the end of its nine-season run. Much of the success of The Office can be attributed to its signature visual cue, when a character gives a befuddled look to the camera.

Exclusive: Scott Gardenhour (13 Hours) is set to produce Ponzi: Pure and True alongside Flag On The Play Productions and producers Dominic Zamprogna and Travis Schneider. The upcoming film adapts the Charles Ponzi biography Ponzi: The Incredible True Story of the King of Financial Cons by Donald Dunn.
Ponzi was, of course, the Italian swindler notorious for his “Ponzi scheme,” used to cheat would-be investors across North America out of tens of millions of dollars, beginning in the 1920s. The film on the con artist has been written by Richard Kahan. Producers’ search for a director for the project is now underway.
“Before Madoff, before any other big-time hustler, there was Charles Ponzi,” said Gardenhour in a statement. “It’s time to meet the swindler’s swindler, the man who invented The Ponzi Scheme. And with an incredible script by Richard Kahan, the true story is crazier and much stranger than fiction.

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but one of the greatest super-spies in all of fiction has gone rogue and is now on the run from the government he's supposed to be working for. Oh, and there's probably another World War on the horizon if he fails. No pressure!
If that general storyline is good enough for the likes of James Bond, Jason Bourne, Jack Bauer, and Ethan Hunt, then it certainly works for one of author Tom Clancy's most enduring characters: Jack Ryan. Prime Video has aired two seasons of "Jack Ryan" with "The Office," "13 Hours," and "A Quiet Place" actor John Krasinski in the title role, punching and shooting his way through hordes of bad guys ever since the show's debut in August of 2018. More than three years after season 2 came to a close, the action/thriller series is back once again with its most dire stakes yet.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.
Per an official synopsis: “The Peripheral” centers on Flynne Fisher (Moretz), a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart, ambitious, and doomed. She has no future; until the future comes calling for her. “The Peripheral” is...

Starz has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming historical drama “The Serpent Queen” starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici. The wicked new drama series will premiere on Sunday, September 11th.
A historical drama with an edge, “The Serpent Queen” puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici’s (Morton) rise to power. In the series premiere, “Medici Bitch,” Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant confident, Rahima. At 14, the young, orphaned Catherine marries into the 16th-century French court. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement, has negotiated a large dowry and a geopolitical alliance in return for the union, and with it comes the expectation of many heirs. However, on her wedding night, Catherine learns that her new husband is in love with Diane de Poitiers,...

John Krasinski‘s push into action stardom is an interesting journey. “The Office” star had been mostly seen as a comedy guy, to the point that Marvel passed on him when he auditioned to play Steve Rogers in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the role that went to Chris Evans instead. Eventually, director Michael Bay cast him in the action pic “13 Hours,” changing the public’s perception, which led to Krasinski being cast in Amazon‘s “Jack Ryan” series based on the beloved Tom Clancy novels.

Michael Bay, the filmmaker behind “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor” and the “Transformers” franchise, was once the premier architect of big-budget explosive blockbusters. “Ambulance,” the director’s latest detonating action-thriller, proves times and tastes have changed in the days since mayhem and Autobots ruled the box office.
Over the weekend, Universal’s “Ambulance,” a heist thriller that largely unfolds on an Ems vehicle, stalled out with 8.7 million from 3,412 North American theaters. It’s a disappointing domestic box office debut given Bay’s track record in fielding commercial hits. The R-rated “Ambulance” currently ranks as the worst opening weekend of Bay’s career, coming in behind 2013’s hulking action comedy “Pain & Gain” (20 million debut) and 2016’s Benghazi war film “13 Hours” (16 million debut). Neither of those movies went on to set the world aflame.
You may be saying, “Hey! We’re still living through a pandemic, and the domestic box office has not returned to normal.

Exclusive: Netflix finally is due to get back up and running on action-thriller Rebel Ridge after an 11-month hiatus.
Filming is set to restart on April 25 in the U.S. after production came to a halt in June with the abrupt departure of star John Boyega.
The Star Wars actor left the movie mid-shoot citing “family reasons.” Speculation swirled online about Boyega’s dissatisfaction with the production, but that was denied by his reps and the streamer.
This isn’t a low-budget movie, so the lead actor exiting mid-shoot posed a significant creative, financial and practical hurdle. That’s part of the reason it has taken so long to get back underway.
Since then, Brit Aaron Pierre was cast in the Boyega role. He is known for his turns in The Underground Railroad and Krypton, and the rising actor also has Amazon’s Foe and Disney’s The Lion King...

Yes, it’s true (and we still can’t believe we wrote that headline above): Ambulance, the new action thriller from none other than director Michael Bay, might just be the divisive filmmaker’s best effort in this century.
After spending a decade in the cinematic hell that was his Transformers series, where he churned out one unwatchable, incoherent, headache-inducing pile of crap after another—with a couple of breaks for the modestly better Pain and Gain in 2013, the politically dumbed-down 13 Hours in 2016, and the tediously awful 6 Underground in 2019—Bay has produced his most consistently enjoyable movie since 1996’s The Rock.
Now, make no mistake, this is still a Michael Bay movie; a lot of the action is still edited as if he threw the footage in a blender and put it on high, and the pile-up of plot turns and over-the-top acting in the third act...

An animated movie about a blue, anthropomorphic speed demon is expected to outrace a Michael Bay action-thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and a Marvel comic book adaptation at the box office this weekend. Welcome to the chaotic state of moviegoing in 2022.
Indeed, Paramount’s family friendly sequel “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” looks to sell more tickets in North American movie theaters than Universal’s starry high-speed heist film “Ambulance” and Sony’s antihero adventure “Morbius,” featuring Jared Leto. Also this weekend, A24’s action-adventure-comedy-fantasy-sci-fi mashup “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is expanding nationwide after two weeks in limited release.
Despite the popularity of all things superhero and the enduring appeal of A-list stars, the imminent dominance of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” isn’t unexpected. Before the pandemic shook up the movie theater business, its predecessor became a surprise box office success, collecting 58 million in its first three days of release and...

Even Michael Bay admits that yes, he should have stopped making “Transformers” movies.
The blockbuster filmmaker was hand selected by producer Steven Spielberg to bring the Hasbro toy line to life with 2007’s “Transformers,” and then he ended up directing four additional sequels. The franchise hit a nadir with 2017’s “Transformers: The Last Knight,” which grossed 500 million less than the previous installment (2014’s “Age of Extinction”) and effectively put the series on ice.
“I made too many of them,” Bay admitted to Unilad UK in a recent interview. “Steven Spielberg said, ‘Just stop at three.’ And I said I’d stop. The studio begged me to do a fourth, and then that made a billion, too. And then I said I’m gonna stop here. And they begged me again. I should have stopped. [But] they were fun to do.”

Loud macho bravado oozes from each explosion-laden, mind-numbing, testosterone-overdosing shot in the grossly expensive — and often quite lucrative — filmography of primo bro director Michael Bay. While his previous empty-headed action debacle, “6 Underground,” debuted on Netflix to little fanfare in 2019, Bay’s newest big-screen entry into his pro-military, pro-police, and pro-outdated masculinity oeuvre, “Ambulance,” comes as
“Nobody gets to kill a cop,” earnestly proclaims camo-pants-wearing Captain Monroe (Garret Dillahunt), about the core reason for the bombastic chase in and around downtown Los Angeles at the center of this heroes-and-robbers movie. This is the man behind the terrible “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” so that the entire plot of this one hinges on the city moving heaven and earth to rescue a naïve policeman seems on brand.
But Bay, not a scribe, can’t get to these atrocious narrative concoctions on his own. For “Ambulance,” screenwriter Chris Fedak adapted...
