On its premiere in June 2012, the series became A&E TV's most watched original series launch of all time with 4.1 million total viewers.
A&E canceled the show after the third season. A few months later Netflix picked the show up for its fourth season. Netflix continued to carry the show going forward, through its sixth and final season.
The scenes for Longmire's cabin are filmed in the Valles Caldera in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. The caldera is a 14-mile-wide volcanic crater. It is now a national preserve. Several Westerns including The Missing (2003) and The Lone Ranger (2013) have used this location.
While a guest on Conan (2010), Jeff Garlin promoted Longmire (2012) by showing a clip from the show, instead of plugging his own show, The Goldbergs (2013). He explained, '''Goldberg' is a huge hit, No. 3 comedy on TV. 'Longmire' needs help. I love 'Longmire' and I want that show to keep going.''
Wyoming license plates have stacked numbers 1-23 on the far left that represent the 23 counties in the state. That means that residents can tell what part of the state a vehicle is from by looking at those numbers, something that everyone in Wyoming knows. License plates on the vehicles in the show start with "24", a non-existent county.
