Hollywood is bursting with "what if" scenarios -- "Sliding Doors" moments where actors, writers, directors, and craftspeople almost made a certain project, or almost walked away from a job that would become huge for their careers. With the benefit of hindsight, these situations are often fun to think about -- especially if, as in the case in today's example, A) the two people competing for a part were vying for a memorable role in a well-known movie, and B) they both went on to have great careers, so the thought exercise doesn't feel mean-spirited or just plain sad.
In an oral history of "Zoolander" published by Vanity Fair in 2021, "Zoolander" writer, producer, director, and star Ben Stiller explained how Owen Wilson nearly didn't end up playing Hansel, Derek Zoolander's rival-male-model-turned-friend, and identified the surprising actor who almost took the role instead:

Rene Russo’s big break in “Major League” came with a minor problem.
The “Major League” writer/director David S. Ward recalled during the “Hollywood Gold” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that Russo was “so nervous” both in the audition and on set that she kept using her hands too much in scenes. As a result, Ward opted to “tie down” her hands so Russo could temper her gestures. “Major League” marked Russo’s first role.
“The only problem we had with her was she’s Italian, and when she gets going there’s a lot of the hands, a lot of the talking with the hands, you know?” Ward said. “And they would be flying across her face.”
While filming the 1989 baseball comedy that co-starred Charlie Sheen, Ward told Russo to keep her hands out of her own face.

Sound the bells y’all! It seems like Round 2 of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House is just around the corner. Coming from the house of Amazon MGM Studios, the movie was considered by the executives a hit, garnering over 80 million views in a very short span of time. This success has seen the studio back the movie for another rodeo as they have already announced that a sequel is in the works. But the creators would be wise to steer clear of a few facets that the first movie got wrong.
The success of Road House
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House is one of Amazon MGM Studio’s most-watched produced film debut
Road House, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, was a remake of the 1989 movie of the same name. The Og Road House was quite the phenomenon, with Patrick Swayze essaying the role of Patrick Dalton, the protagonist.

Imagine this scenario. What if Nightcrawler presented the ideas of unethical journalism not in a thriller setting, but through horror tropes? What if Jake Gyllenhaal's stringer had found himself in a creepy situation that involved not insane crimes, but incomprehensible horror coursing through his entire body? What if the movie had taken a much darker mystical body horror turn, combining the creepy psychology of Jacob's Ladder with the mysticism of John Carpenter's films?
Well, the result would have been one of the scariest movies ever made in the history of the horror genre. And in fact, such a movie has recently been produced: not long ago, the Netflix library was enriched with a Mexican horror thriller that provides one of the wildest cinematic experiences, playing the moral underpinnings of unscrupulous journalism as effectively as Nightcrawler.

Every couple of months in comic book-centric social media circles, someone reposts a comics page in which Deadpool shooting Spider-Man in the head or decapitating an exhausted Bruce Banner. These panels usually spark arguments about whether or not these kills are in character (they aren’t) or if the entire thing is a joke (it is).
Eventually, someone points out that the pages come from Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, a 2012-2013 miniseries by Cullen Bunn and Dalibor Talajic. The story involves Deadpool’s fourth-wall-breaking powers driving him so mad that he decides to kill all the other Marvel characters because they’re fictional and their lives don’t matter. Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe may have inspired controversy, but it also inspired several sequels, including Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again.
From all that we’ve seen so far, Deadpool & Wolverine seems to have little in common with Bunn and Talajic’s take.

When it was originally announced that the original X-Men series would continue its story 30 years after it ended, there weren’t many expectations. However, since X-Men ’97 began its run, the acclaim and attention it is getting is truly spectacular. On top of older fans tuning into the story again, the conversation around the series and its release has gathered new viewers as well.
X-Men ’97
The story began right where it left off, and fans were hoping to be eased into the harsher parts of the world. However, as some have put it, more blood has been shed in this show than in all of Disney’s history.

The actor, last seen in Apple’s love drama Fingernails, has joined the roster of acclaimed auteur’s latest project, an untitled feature that is now shooting in Berlin.
Plot details are being kept in the breast pocket, but it is shaping up to be another ensemble piece with several of his usual cadre of artists.
Benicio Del Toro and Bill Murray are also on the call sheet for the project. The feature has a script from Anderson and Roman Coppola, who has worked on five of the filmmaker’s movies. Michael Cera, also cast in the picture, is among the other Anderson first-timers.

Photography converts the whole world into a cemetery. Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also – wittingly or unwittingly – the recording-angels of death.
– Susan Sontag
Those words appear at the beginning of Disappear Completely (Desaparecer Por Completo), and seem perfectly appropriate as we see Santiago sitting in his car listening to the police radio. He’s a photographer, and he’s waiting to hear what he’ll be covering next. He doesn’t have long to wait before he’s busy shooting pictures of a cuffed suspect, sobbing victims in an ambulance, and, with the help of a bribe, a woman’s corpse.
Santiago works for a Mexican tabloid, one that very firmly believes the old adage, “If it bleeds, it leads”. And he’s excellent at capturing that bleeding on film, regardless of the cost.

“Disappear Completely” may suffer from diminishing returns, but there’s an ironic pleasure in a movie about a cursed man losing his five senses one at a time that gets gradually worse as you watch it.
Caught somewhere between Dan Gilroy’s “Nightcrawler” and Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me to Hell,” director Luis Javier Henain’s Spanish-language horror won the attention of genre fans out of Fantastic Fest 2022 but just started streaming in the U.S. on Netflix Friday, April 12. The supernatural tale of intensifying torture recounts the fate of Santiago (the unflappable Harold Torres), a tabloid photographer whose primary job seems to be hunting down crime scenes so he can snag candid shots of corpses.
We meet our nauseating anti-hero at the scene of a picturesque accident; crushed by a light pole, a young woman in yellow bleeds beautifully. She’s evocative of Evelyn McHale (look it up!) and...

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" to follow.
The latest episode of "X-Men '97," "Remember It," took us to mutant haven Genosha (before it all went to Hell anyway). The island turned out to be a treasure trove of cameos; the Genoshan ruling council included Hellfire Club leaders Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw, Morlock leader Callisto, the Irish mutant Banshee, Professor X's old flame Moira MacTaggert, and former Goblin Queen Madelyne Pryor. The streets of Genosha were filled with other mutants whom "X-Men" comics fans may recognize, from Pixie to Dazzler to Marrow to Exodus.
The best mutant cameo of all, though, is the blue-skinned Bavarian Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler. His voice actor, Adrian Hough, joins the ranks of those who've reprised their roles from the 1992 "X-Men" cartoon.
Kurt shows up in the episode's title sequence doing some sword fighting with Gambit. In the episode itself, he escorts Rogue and Gambit...

Netflix has won the streaming wars, but of course, that doesn't mean it's perfect. One of the popular dings against the streamer is that many of its original productions share a similar flattened, brightly lit aesthetic -- a "Netflix look" that, fairly or not, can sometimes seem like an edict passed on to storytellers from the top down to make their shows and movies look a certain way. Naturally, this doesn't apply to every show, but if you watch enough of them, you'll start to see patterns emerge.
Thankfully, Steven Zaillian's "Ripley," a new take on Patricia Highsmith's famous con man story, is about as far from that typical "Netflix look" as you can get. Legendary cinematographer Robert Elswit imbues this show with a palpable style and personality, constantly playing with light and shadow and delivering spectacular results.

The reboot was helmed by Doug Liman, and the numbers recorded are a positive sign that even though the film was overlooked for a theatrical release, the power of storytelling is still compelling, even if it is on a small screen.
The choice to go straight to streaming was deliberate on the part of the makers and the studio. Either way, the move paid off, as the film has set a new record.

Jake Gyllenhaal is a versatile actor who has juggled between film and stage (having appeared on New York stages recently in “Sunday in the Park with George” as well as the play “Sea Wall”/”A Life”). He continues to choose roles that are challenging and unexpected.
Gyllenhaal has been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Ang Lee‘s “Brokeback Mountain,” as well as two SAG Awards for that performance including Best Supporting Actor. He was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards (for 2010’s “Love and Other Drugs” and 2014’s “Nightcrawler”). Gyllenhaal was also nominated for a third Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in “Nightcrawler.”
Currently, Gyllenhaal has a host of films on tap for release in 2020 and beyond. But until then, let’s raise a glass to the great performer by ranking his 17 best feature film appearances. Our photo gallery includes “Zodiac,” “Prisoners,” “Donnie Darko” and more.

Blumhouse Productions and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell are bringing us another reboot of a classic Universal Pictures property with Wolf Man, which had the perfect release date: October 25th, delivering werewolf action to the big screen just in time for Halloween. But Wolf Man only just started filming earlier this month, and the filmmakers clearly feel that they need more than seven months to get it ready for theatres. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Wolf Man‘s release has been delayed, pushed back to January 17, 2025. The studio already had another Blumhouse project scheduled for a January 10th release, the Jaume Collet-Serra / Danielle Deadwyler thriller The Woman in the Yard… but with Wolf Man moving to January, The Woman in the Yard has been bumped off the schedule entirely. We’ll have to wait and see when Universal will decide to release that one.

It’s no secret that Jake Gyllenhaal’s Oscar snub for his performance in 2014’s Nightcrawler was considered by many as an atrocious crime, but the fact that the actor has only received one nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2005’s Brokeback Mountain is even more appalling.
Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler
No one, indeed, has any explanation for why the Oscars so actively avoids Gyllenhaal and his incredible body of works. He is one of the most prolific stars of this generation, yet he is still in the league of the most snubbed actors of all time.
Jake Gyllenhaal Starved Himself For Nightcrawler
The world of Nightcrawler is found in Los Angeles at night, where stringers go out to film accidents and crime scenes and sell them to the local news. Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Louis Bloom, becomes the symbol that draws the line between unethical journalism and consumer demand.

Denzel Washington, a prolific actor with a long list of iconic characters, revealed that his most treasured role is not from any action-packed blockbuster or historical epic. Instead, it comes from a film in which he played a civil rights lawyer who is autistic.

The movie is Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017), which resonated deeply with the 69-year-old star. Though the movie received mixed reviews and grossed only $13 million worldwide (via The Numbers), Washington himself found great personal satisfaction in playing the character.

Jake Gyllenhaal Once Admitted Putting A Lot Of Pressure On Himself While Filming Spider-Man: Far From Home (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Road House star Jake Gyllenhaal, born in the Gyllenhaal family, has lived up to the family’s legacy. But there were times when he got overwhelmed while filming, and something similar happened during Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. He appeared in the role of Mysterio and heavily impacted the life of Tom Holland’s character, Peter Parker. The Oscar-nominated actor is known for going the extra mile for his roles.
He lost around 30 pounds for his role in Nightcrawler. However, after that, he decided not to get engrossed in a role further, and the primary reason for it might be his Oscar snub. He was not nominated for the Academy Awards for that part. On the personal front, Jake is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has been part of many appreciated films in the thirty years he has been part of the film industry. The actor has worked with acclaimed directors such as Ang Lee, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, and Dan Gilroy. The Zodiac star has been nominated for the Oscars once and the Golden Globes twice.

What is the meaning of success? And how far would you go to be successful? These are just some of the many questions I’m left with after watching Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut film- Nightcrawler. A film that packs many questions and shockingly few answers as intended by the filmmakers behind it. It’s a movie firmly planted in “literally me” culture with a main character who is equally interesting and terrifying- yet strangely observable at the same time.
For a riveting viewing experience that will entertain you (and leave you heavily reflecting on your morals)- Nightcrawler may be what you’re looking for as we follow Lou Bloom, a shady L.A. loner who gets by on low-level schemes and odd jobs. But when he discovers the dark and dangerous world of freelance crime scene photography- Lou becomes obsessed with rising to the top of the food chain as a professional stringer.

Now that the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations have all been announced, it’s time to take a closer look at what they all mean. Seven lead and six supporting performers reaped bids will all four of these precursor prizes (scroll down to see who’s on that list), but can they all count on hearing their names called when the Oscar nominations are unveiled on January 23?
Since the Critics Choice Awards joined the other three precursors in publicizing official nominations in 2002, there have been 11 instances when someone nominated across the board did not go on to contend at the Oscars. Given the lack of precedent for such an occurrence until 2012, the current hopefuls are unfortunately saddled with the implications of the adjusted average of about one case per year.

Julia Garner, who may be best known for playing the role of Ruth Langmore on the Netflix series Ozark, made her feature acting debut in the 2011 film Martha Marcy May Marlene, which also happened to star Christopher Abbott. We recently heard that Abbott had signed on to star in the Wolf Man reboot that’s coming our way from Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell – and now Deadline reports that the film is going to be a Martha Marcy May Marlene reunion, as Garner has also been cast in Wolf Man!
Abbott is taking on the role of a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator. Garner must be playing his wife, because her character is described as being a mother whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator. Their characters seem to have a 10 year old daughter named Ginger, as...

One character that hasn’t been cast just yet is a 10-year-old female named Ginger, and Blumhouse has sent out a casting call in search of the right young actor to fill the role.
Ginger is described as being “Female, 10 years old, white. Blake and Charlotte’s daughter. Smart, precocious, and strong. When her family decides to leave the city for a quieter life in a remote area, she faces her biggest fear, the possibility of losing one or both of her parents forever.” Blumhouse is hoping to find someone...

Found in your local “Shower After Watching” section of the suspicious flea market around the corner is 1993’s Skinner. And it’s probably the only movie in that bin to feature an acting performance from daytime talk show host Ricki Lake. Seriously.
This little piece of rarely spoken about horror history is one part Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and one-part uncategorizable madness that I’m semi-shocked is still available to watch at all, much less to be reached in an instant on Tubi.
In the film, directed by feature director turned porn director Ivan Nagy, Dennis Skinner (the great Ted Raimi) is an active serial killer who murders mostly prostitutes and then skins them, stitches them back together and wears them while talking about his childhood and saying things like “This really is the clothing…..for a divine soul.”
