About Mazda

The history of Mazda can be traced back to 1920 when it was founded as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. in Hiroshima, Japan. Initially, the company focused on producing cork for industrial use, but soon expanded its operations to include machine tools and vehicles.

In the 1930s, Mazda shifted its focus towards the production of vehicles and in 1931, it introduced its first three-wheeled truck. This marked the beginning of Mazda's journey into the automotive industry, which would eventually lead to the production of its first passenger car in 1960.

One of Mazda's most significant contributions to the automotive industry was the development of the rotary engine. In 1967, Mazda launched the Cosmo Sport 110S, the world's first production car powered by a rotary engine. This innovation helped Mazda differentiate itself from other car manufacturers and cemented its reputation as a pioneer in engine technology.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Mazda continued to expand its global presence by entering new markets and forming partnerships with other car manufacturers. In 1979, Mazda established its North American headquarters in Irvine, California, signaling its commitment to the U.S. market.

In the following decades, Mazda continued to push the boundaries of automotive technology with the introduction of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which became the best-selling two-seater convertible sports car in history. Mazda also focused on developing fuel-efficient vehicles, such as the Skyactiv technology, which improves fuel efficiency without compromising performance.

As Mazda celebrates its centennial in 2020, the company remains committed to innovation and sustainable practices. With the introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles, Mazda is adapting to the changing landscape of the automotive industry and striving to reduce its environmental impact.

The history of Mazda is a testament to the company's ability to adapt and innovate in a rapidly changing industry. From its humble beginnings as a cork producer to its position as a global automotive manufacturer, Mazda has come a long way in the past century. As Mazda continues to evolve and embrace new technologies, it will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the automotive world for years to come.
