'Struggling' is the first sign that your career is not aligned to your purpose, so it is really difficult to find passion. That feeling is good news, is telling you that there is need for change. So... first we need to look at our personal situation with curiosity and see what brings us energy on a day-to-day as well as what drains our energy. Make an inventory of all those daily experiences. If you have too many energy drainers... guess what? time to channel our inner 'marie-kondo' and 'donate' (delegate)/remove from your life the energy drainer activities as much as possible and do more of what brings you joy. The secret is in making space for the smalls sparks and grow them.

Many 'executives' (mid-career senior managers?) will reach a point where meaning becomes more important than achievement. This manifests initially as disaffection, but can easily develop into anything from a mid-life crisis to a dark night of the soul. Essentially it's a disconnect between what you do and your inner sense of purpose, eroding your mental/physical health until you do something about it. Many continue because they are afraid to lose income. Long-term, fear-based activities are guaranteed to compromise health.

I would suggest "journaling" as an incredibly effective strategy for deep reflection that goes beyond simple contemplation. It's like having a conversation with yourself on paper, which can be incredibly revealing and therapeutic as you navigate through your career.

Try to find meaning and passion again in the work that you do and increase the time you spend on tasks that align with your higher priorities.

Both Life purpose and Career purpose aren't just set one time and are supposed to last forever. A purpose is revisited as often as needed though most of the time they are just tiny bit tweaked and not necessarily totally revamped. This process requires time and effort that aren't always deployed for this purpose.
It's essential to understand how others perceive your strengths and contributions. Solicit feedback from colleagues, mentors, and even family members. Hearing diverse perspectives can provide valuable insights into your unique talents and areas where you could find renewed passion. This feedback loop can also highlight how your work impacts others, potentially revealing purposeful aspects of your job that you may have overlooked.

Think about a different kind of balance: between exploit and explore. You have ‘Exploit’: what they have been doing up and who they have been up until now. This will almost always include their source of their value and income, it will be tied to their expertise and their experience. There are a few exceptions, those who are lucky enough to be independently wealthy, but those are rare. And then you have their ‘Explore’: which are areas that have potential, these could be side hustles, they could be hobbies, they could be long dreamed of goals and aspirations that people just somehow never got to. This then allows you to explore what I call 'capability bridges' from one to the other. Integrate the work-life balance within this frame.

Career purpose can't be determined in isolation of Life purpose. While the first might have more KPIs and OKRs, both purposes need to be aligned with a lot in common. No one has ever become a totally different person the minute they step out of home and inside the office and no one is supposed to do so 100%. A Career can constitute up to 70% of ones's life so how can a career purpose be any different from Life purpose?

Additionally, consider potential pivots or lateral moves within your field that could offer new challenges and rekindle your passion.

Consider what legacy you are building through your day-to-day actions and the overall impact of the work you are accomplishing. Reconnect with what success means to you and what makes success significant and meaningful for you. Use a combination of reflective meditation, journaling, and working with a coach to help you see beyond what is directly in front of you and reconnect with the big picture of your impact - actual and desired. Finding joy and fulfillment in senior and executive leadership requires intentional and continuous reflection, realignment, and renewal to ensure that your actions today are creating the legacy of your tomorrow.

Remember there are the ABCI's of any transition: Agency - you need to feel that you have an effect on thing you are trying to do. Belonging - that you are not alone, that there are others like you. Cause - that is it important to you, it doesn't have to an ethical or social dimension, but it needs to move you in some way. Identity - this is as much about how you want to see yourself (also the key to lasting behaviour change) as it is how others see you. Don't forget this part, it's often disproportionately important. A transition can be very hard, and the mixture of the above is deeply personal, but you need to have all four.
