Azure backup for on-premises and cloud resources

- [Instructor] Azure has many backup options from which to choose. Some are for on-premises devices and others are cloud based. Let's take a look at some of these options. With on-premises devices, we can back up files, folders, system state of your on-premises servers and clients, using the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent, also known as MARS. With Azure Virtual Machines, you can back up entire Windows or Linux VMs, or back up files, folders, and the system state using the MARS agent. Azure Managed Disks are block-level storage volumes that are managed by Azure and used with Azure Virtual Machines. We can back up Azure Managed Disks into the Azure Cloud. Backup Azure file shares to a storage account. Azure files can be Azure v2 storage created in the Azure Portal. You can then create shares that can be mapped to client drives, just like an on-premises server share. Azure Blob Storage is used as a repository for large amounts of unorganized files to be kept as needed. We can back these types of files up in Azure as well. If you're using the SQL database in an Azure Virtual Machine, you can back up the MS SQL databases separate from the virtual machine itself. You can do the same with Postgre databases as well. Some of the advantages to using Azure Backup are that you no longer need to have physical storage devices that need to be swapped or replaced, you can keep the backups as long as needed, the storage is scalable as much as you want to use, centralized monitoring by Microsoft, and multiple storage options. The cost may be higher depending on how much data you store. There is a lack of control, since the data is no longer in your possession. That may cause an issue with security and compliance. The restoration can take much longer than on-premises restoration based on server and internet speed. Some companies use both on-premises and cloud storage for backups. This can give you the extra protection you may need, but be sure to watch the costs each month.
