“The legend of Erdrick draws near.”

A short video from Square Enix reveals that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, a remake of the 1988 RPG, will come to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Square Enix first announced it in 2021 alongside Dragon Quest 12, and we could soon get a release date. The charming art style is reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, which uses the same engine.

Now do one that’s shaped like Mario.

I haven’t played the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake quite yet, but it’s in the queue with the other great Mario RPG games for the Switch.

And now, so is this paper airplane that Nintendo hired John Collins, a former world record paper plane maker, to make a tutorial video for. Oh, and there’s an official printable template (PDF).

This person just beat Super Mario 64 with zero A-button presses.

For nearly three decades Super Mario 64 fans have been trying to beat the game with the least number of A-button presses, which controls Mario’s jumps. But now, Twitch streamer Marbler finally whittled that number down to zero during a run on the Wii Virtual Console — a feat that took 86 hours to complete.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character rankings debunked.

In a new video, game creator Masahiro Sakurai says all SSBU fighters have an online victory rate between 47.18 percent and 51.43 percent, giving them all about the same shot at winning.

And that one character you think is OP? Sakurai blames the online “echo chamber” for pushing the idea that some fighters are stronger or weaker than others.

Nintendo buys studio to expand its library of third-party games.

In its purchase of Shiver Entertainment — which previously ported Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1 to the Switch — from troubled gaming conglomerate Embracer Group, Nintendo says:

By welcoming Shiver’s experienced and accomplished development team, Nintendo aims to secure high-level resources for porting and developing software titles. Going forward, even after it becomes a part of the Nintendo group, Shiver’s focus will remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch.

DS Heavy.

Auto-translated from Japanese:

Nintendo DS CRT Ver. Finally completed!!! (📚🍣) Two 14-inch CRTs (SONY Trinitron) are used. (S terminal output)

The sound and picture quality are both amazing! However, the problem is that you can’t carry it in your pocket... That’s why we named it DS Heavy. (Total weight: 28KG)

Mario Land lands on the Switch.

It’s a great time for fans of classic games, and for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers that means a trio of Game Boy games, led by the oddball Super Mario Land. If you want to feel ancient, the company says the release is timed to the handheld’s 35th anniversary. I still remember when it was only 30.

After 28 years, someone opened an “unopenable” door in Super Mario 64.

YouTuber pannenkoek2012 explains, in great detail, why a door in the “Cool, Cool Mountain” can’t be opened (there’s an invisible wall) and how someone figured out how to open it anyway.

Have a look at the official promo for Anbernic’s Game Boy Advance SP.

Get a load of the transparent shells on the upcoming RG35XXSP! It’s still not listed for sale on Anbernic’s site, sadly, but that could change pretty soon.

Nintendo Switch direct sharing to X / Twitter ends on June 10th.

Just like PlayStation a few months ago and the Xbox platform last spring, Nintendo’s Twitter sharing features are disappearing as the X API lockdown tightens. (The send friend requests to social media from your Switch feature is also going away.)

The X Gaming account claims “Our partnership with Nintendo remains strong,” so we’ll see which integrations end up on the “Switch 2.”

Can you resist Anbernic’s Game Boy Advance SP that plays PS1 and N64 games?

Anbernic is the biggest name in affordable emu-portables. Many mimic a Game Boy — but the RG35XXSP is first to tackle the beloved folding Game Boy Advance SP.

It’s got dual microSD slots, a headphone jack, Bluetooth 4.2 and “5G WIFI,” plus HDMI output to your TV. Transparent shells, too! No price yet, but Retro Dodo says it’s imminent.

Nintendo expects Switch to become its best-selling console ever this year.

With 141.32 million current sales, the company is forecasting the Nintendo Switch will sell another 13.5 million units in the coming financial year, enough to dethrone the Nintendo DS as its best-selling platform.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units during its sales run, with Sony’s PlayStation 2 console still occupying the top spot (for now) with over 155 million sales.

Nintendo Wii and GameCube games get HDR — in the Dolphin Emulator.

If you’ve got a good HDR monitor or a recent MacBook Pro, you can even check out some sample images here in Chrome or other Chromium-based browsers. More details in Dolphin’s big progress report.

“Our HDR enhancements are not magic. Expect quirks and problems,” MayImilae and co warn.

Now THIS is how you DMCA takedown a Nintendo emulator, people.

You may not like it, but I’m having a hard time finding issue with how Microsoft-owned GitHub wiped 8,535 forks of Switch emulator Yuzu off the web. It says it warned repo owners, let ‘em make changes, let them submit DMCA counternotices, and publicly posted Nintendo’s takedown request.

That’s a lot more than we can say for Discord and GitLab!

Tales of Kenzera’s heart-wrenching story proved tougher than its platforming

There’s challenging combat and platforming puzzles, but the hardest part of the game is grappling with its emotional story.

The best worst way to play Metroid Prime.

I have finally justified my Vision Pro purchase with the iOS version of the Delta emulator.

Can’t wait to be top banana.

Sega’s Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble — the first truly new game in the series in more than 10 years — is coming to the Nintendo Switch on June 25th.

Here’s a trailer for the 16-player online multiplayer, which looks... so much better than, say, Monkey Tennis in Super Monkey Ball 2.

Is Nintendo going off the rails?

Specifically, the rails that keep Joy-Cons firmly connected to the Switch? Because Spanish pub Vandal (which correctly reported minor details of the Switch OLED before launch) says a larger Switch 2 will replace those rails with magnets.

That’s according to accessory vendors who apparently didn’t even see the Switch 2, mind, just touched it in a box. Still: magnets alone? I could see magnets and rails, but...

What to do when Metroid Prime 4 still isn’t out.

What’s it like to play Metroid Prime Hunters in an Apple-approved emulator for iOS — Delta, in this case — on a Vision Pro?

Well, since nobody asked, I’ll tell you: it’s unexpectedly playable. Emulated Nintendo DS touchscreen aiming works well if you pinch and hold while looking at the upper screen. Sure, you could use buttons to aim in Hunters, but why would you?

Two very different N64 racers now on Switch Online.

Nintendo has updated its subscription service with Extreme-G, a futuristic racing game with gravity-defying tracks, and Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls, where you play as... bouncing animal spheres. Truly, an update with something for everyone.

Speaking of turning your phone into a Nintendo emulator:

The best free Game Boy Advance emulator for Android is back now its developer is less scared. Pizza Boy’s Davide Berra:

After a few weeks of consideration and after discussing with several people (both in the field and not), I’ve realized that I can’t set aside a passion and effort of so many years. Experimentally, I am trying to revisit the apps to make them available again on the Google Play Store with some renewals. Let’s start with Pizza Boy A Basic and hopefully continue with the others.

The pro version let me turn my Samsung Z Flip into a GBA SP.

The best part about Delta Emulator: it’s for your TV, too.

Webster already wrote about this, but I’m seriously wowed at how easy it was to turn an iPhone into a retro console for my TV. Once you add a gamepad, everything but joystick-sensitive games (sorry, GoldenEye fans) feels playable!

Delta dev Riley Testut tells me he’s “definitely open” to adding joystick sensitivity adjustment. For now, it uses Apple’s default calibrations.
