Improved toolbars in the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides apps on Android devices 
We’re introducing enhanced toolbars in the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides apps that are optimized for Android tablets and foldables, and ultimately improve the editing experience across the apps. 
  • In Docs, there is a new mode switcher that allows you to switch between editing, suggestion, and viewing modes. 
  • In Slides, you will have access to an ever-present toolbar while in editing mode. 
  • In Sheets, a cell will be selected by default upon opening the app.

A redesigned navigation panel brings direct messages and spaces together and introduces shortcuts, a new framework to help you stay on top of your messages. To reduce friction while navigating between messages, home helps you quickly catch up on any new activity across all conversations in a single location. Filter by people or groups in Google Drive 
We’re adding a new filter to Google Drive that lets you see which files or folders have been shared with specific people or groups. | Learn more about filters in Drive.

Improvements for scheduling large scale meetings on the web
We’re making several changes which will make scheduling large scale meetings (up to 100k guests per event) easier and guide schedulers through the process with more context. Once you’ve created and saved a Calendar event which contains a large group of attendees, you can open the event to check on the invitation progress. | Learn more about large scale meetings in Calendar.

Introducing a new homepage in the Google Drive app 
We’re updating the homepage of the Google Drive mobile app on Android and iOS mobile devices to help you more easily find the right file much faster. An updated suggested view will allow you to see even more recommended files at once, such as those that have been recently opened, shared or edited. In addition, we’re replacing the notifications view with activity view, which recently launched on web. | Learn more about the homepage in Drive.

What’s changing
You can now make cloud-encrypted 1:1 video calls to other users in your organization using the Meet mobile app. Previously, you had to create a meeting link ahead of time, which could then be shared in a calendar invite, chat, or email. Now you can place a Meet call on your mobile app directly to a colleague, ringing their mobile device. Within the call, you’ll also have access to the latest Meet features including in-meeting chat, virtual backgrounds and visual effects, live closed captions, and more depending on your Workspace edition.

Getting started 
  • Admins: This feature will be ON by default and can only be turned OFF by turning off Meet meetings and calls for your organization. 
    • Alternatively, you can deploy the Google Meet (Original) app from Google Play or the App Store to managed devices if you do not wish for users to have calling capabilities (outbound and inbound calls). 
    • Note: We will introduce admin controls to restrict inbound calls next year. We’ll provide an update here on the Workspace Updates Blog when more information is available. 
    • If you have legacy calling enabled for your users, they will have access to features previously found in Duo (group calls, messages, moments, family mode, etc.) if they have not upgraded to the new Meet app. 
  • End users: 
    • Meet calls do not include legacy calling features previously found in Duo (group calls, messages, moments, family mode, knock knock) but those continue to be available if you have not upgraded to the new Meet app and are using legacy calling. 
    • Visit the Help Center to learn how to make Meet Calls with Google Meet and to learn about the new Google Meet app.

Adding a two-page view for PDFs in the Google Drive app on large screen Android devices 
You can now flip between a single page width view or a newly added two-page width view when scrolling through a PDF using the Google Drive app on your Android tablet or foldable device. Multi-task using new split screen feature in the Gmail app on large screen Android devices 
Last year, we announced numerous improvements to the Google Workspace experience on large screen Android devices, which included multi-instance support on Drive, Docs, Sheets & Slides. We’re excited to introduce a similar feature for the Gmail app on Android tablets & foldables. With this update, you can now open links & attachments directly beside your email content when your device is in landscape orientation. 
  • Upon tapping a link (or attachment) in your email, the link (or attachment) will open on the right half of the screen and the email will move to the left half. 
  • You can control the width of each half or make one the full screen by dragging on the divider handle.

Add Google Groups to spaces in Google Chat 
Last month, we rolled out the admin controls for a new feature that enables space managers and users with the permission to manage members to add Google Groups to a space. Earlier this year, we introduced a new file access experience to make it easier for file approvers to respond to pending access requests across Google Workspace. We’re happy to announce that this update is now available on Android devices. Google Chrome and other browsers have begun phasing out third-party cookies in order to better protect user privacy. What’s changing 
We’re integrating the Android Zero-Touch iFrame with the Admin console for a better, more seamless experience for admins. Zero-Touch devices are devices which have been purchased from Zero-Touch resellers and used in company owned mode. 

Directly from the admin console, admins will be able to: 
  • Set Google Workspace provided configurations for zero-touch devices. 
  • Link Workspace accounts with zero-touch accounts, ensuring devices will always enroll under Google endpoint management. They’ll also have the ability to unlink accounts if needed. Note that one Workspace account can be linked to multiple zero-touch accounts, but a zero-touch account can be linked to only one Workspace account.
In the Admin console, navigate to Devices > Mobile & endpoints > Settings > Enrollment > Android Zero touch

Why you’d use it 
This update makes it easier for admins to specify a Zero touch configuration for their company owned devices directly from the Admin console. For enterprise mobility management partners (EMMs) this also minimizes the number of Google APIs and portals they need to interact with as well. Zero-touch devices will always enroll an account according to the GEM provided configuration — users cannot bypass this, even if they factory reset the device.

We strongly recommend that you continue to use the Zero-Touch customer portal if you need to:
  • View a list of your zero-touch company owned devices
  • Create more than one custom configuration
  • Set or remove configurations from a device

What’s changing 
You can now bind multiple Android enterprise mobility management providers (EMM) to your Google Workspace account. Previously, you could only bind a single EMM within your organization. This update gives you more control over how devices in your organization are managed. Specifically, it offers: 


More flexibility: You can choose the right EMM for each user group in your organization. For example, you can use one EMM for engineers and another for retail staff. 


Enhanced control: You can now have multiple instances of the same EMM provider, for example a cloud instance and an on-premise instance, to manage different sets of users. 


Easier migrations: You can now run multiple EMMs in parallel, allowing them to perform phased migrations from an old EMM to the new EMM over time.

We strongly recommend that admins familiarize themselves with how binding multiple EMMs will impact availability of private apps. You can find more information in our Help Center regarding creating web apps and distributing private apps.

If you’re binding multiple EMMs to a Google Workspace or Google Cloud identity account, you must use your EMM iframe and not play.google.com/work to access the managed Google Play store.

What’s changing 
We’re expanding client-side encryption in Gmail to Android and iOS devices, so you can read and write encrypted messages directly from your device. This allows your users to work with your most sensitive data from anywhere on their mobile devices while adhering to compliance and regulatory requirements. The Gmail mobile apps support encrypted mail natively, so users don't need to download multiple apps, or navigate to an external portal, to access their encrypted messages. 


While Workspace encrypts data at rest and in transit by using secure-by-design cryptographic libraries, client-side encryption ensures that you have sole control over encryption keys and access to your data. Client-side encryption ensures sensitive data in the email body and attachments are indecipherable to Google servers — you retain control over encryption keys and the identity service to access those keys. Getting started
  • Admins: Admin will need to enable the Android and iOS clients in the CSE admin interface in order for users to have access. This can be done in the Admin Console by going to Security > Access and data control > Client-side encryption > Identity provider configuration. 
  • End users: To add client-side encryption to any message, click the lock icon and select additional encryption, and compose your message and add attachments as normal. Visit the Help Center to learn more about using client-side encryption for Gmail.

What’s changing

For years, our users have conveniently translated emails in Gmail on the web to over 100 languages. Starting today, we’re excited to announce a native translation integration within the Gmail mobile app that will enable you to seamlessly communicate in a wide range of languages. 

To translate messages on mobile, simply select “Translate” on the dismissible banner and choose your preferred language.

Why it matters 
This highly requested feature will help users read and understand a conversation in any language. 


Additional details 
A new dismissible banner appears when the content language of a message is different from the “Google.com Mail display language” in your account settings. You can also choose to have Gmail always translate or never translate specific languages. 

Getting started 
  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature. 
  • End users: 
    • To translate a message, click the “Translate” option at the top of your email. 
    • If you dismiss the translation option, the option will appear again the next time the content language of an email doesn't match the set “Google.com Mail display language”. 
    • You can also turn off this setting, which never shows the banner again for a specific language, by accepting the prompt (“Don’t translate [language] again”) that appears when you dismiss the banner, or by selecting "Don't translate [language] again" from the translation settings menu. 
    • If a user has explicitly opt-ed out of translation (as stated above) or the system did not detect another language, you can manually translate a message through the three dot menu. 
    • Visit the Help Center to learn more about translating Gmail messages.

Empty the entire trash folder of shared drives in Google Drive
In order to make it easier to manage shared drive files and eliminate the manual effort of removing items in the trash folder, we’ve added the ability to empty the entire trash folder of a shared drive. As a reminder, files and folders in Trash are deleted forever after 30 days. You can also delete files in Trash by selecting “Delete Forever”.

Linkable headings now available in Google Docs
To improve shareability of documents, especially longer ones, we’re adding the ability to copy links to headings in Google Docs. Simply, open a Google Doc on web > add a heading (type some content and set to “Heading 1”) > right-click the heading > click the “Copy heading link” button > paste the contents.

People chips in Google Sheets now available on mobile devices 
In 2021, we introduced people chips in Google Sheets. These chips allow you to quickly view more information about colleagues or contacts, including their location, job title, and contact information. Adding drag & drop to Google Drive multi-instance support on large screen Android devices
Earlier this year, we added the option for a single user to have two instances of the Google Drive app open side-by-side on a single device, which shows content from two different Google Accounts. Starting this week, you can now drag and drop between two instances of the Drive app, enabling you to quickly share files and folders between two different accounts. | Learn more about using Google Drive.

Insert emojis into Google Sites 
You can now create more engaging content on Google Sites with the new option to insert emojis directly into text boxes and headings. Simply, create or open a Site > click any textbox and the emoji button will be visible in the toolbar > select the emoji button > choose an emoji.

Paste HTML into document on iOS 
Last month, we announced the ability to paste copied HTML elements into a document on Android. We’re excited to announce that this functionality is now available on iOS devices.

Set Context Aware Access policies for 1P & 3P applications to access Workspace APIs 
Admins can now use context-aware access to block or limit first and third party API access to Google Workspace applications. With context-aware access, you can set up different access levels to Workspace applications based on a user’s identity and the context of the request (location, device security status, IP address). Extending these policies to APIs that request Workspace core data gives admins another layer of control and security and helps protect against data exfiltration. | Available to Google Workspace Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, Education Plus, and Cloud Identity Premium customers only. | Visit the Help Center to learn more about controlling which third-party & internal apps access Google Workspace data, context-aware access, creating context-aware access levels, and assigning access levels to apps. 

Include audio when sharing your screen using Google Meet on mobile
If you're using Google Meet on a mobile device, you can now share audio in addition to your screenshare. Share a video with sound, or share music along with your presentation. | This feature is available now on iOS and will begin rolling out for Android mid-August 2023. | Learn more about presenting during a video meeting. 

A single Google group can be a member of 30,000 shared drives 
Previously, a single Google group could be added as a member to an unlimited number of shared drives. To protect the reliability of access changes for users in Google groups, a single group can now be added to no more than 30,000 shared drives. | Rolling out now to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains at an extended pace (potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility). | Available to Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Standard, Education Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Nonprofits only. | Learn more about shared drive limits in Google Drive.

Sync users and groups from an Azure Active Directory using Directory Sync Google 
Workspace Admins can now use Directory Sync to sync users and groups from Azure Active Directory. Directory Sync is an alternative to Google Cloud Directory Sync (GCDS), which admins can use to synchronize user and group data with their Google Cloud directory without the need to manage on-prem hardware and deployments. | Learn more about Directory Sync. 

Disable submissions after a due date in Google Classroom

In-line replies now available within announcement spaces in Google Chat

Easily convert email addresses and links into smart chips using the tab key in Google Sheets 
You will now have the option to insert a link and press the tab key to convert the link into a smart chip in Google Sheets. Revamping the "First Open Experience" in Docs on Android foldable and tablet devices
Last week, we announced  a more creation-focused experience when first opening the Sheets and Slides apps on Android devices. We’re extending this to the Docs app, which will now start in edit mode for foldable and tablet devices. Additionally, the formatting toolbar will be more visible, you will see an I-beam cursor, and tapping once exposes an on-screen keyboard unless a physical keyboard is attached.

Pin links to the top of the navigation bar in the Admin console 
Admins can now pin up to five links to the top of the left-hand navigation menu. Customize error messages for Google Chat data loss prevention rules, available in open beta 
For new and existing data protection rules for Google Chat, you can now customize the message shown to users when a message is blocked or intercepted. Previously, the message would be a standard warning, shared for all cases. Client-side encryption for Google Calendar is now generally available on mobile 
Earlier this year, we expanded the client-side encryption beta to Google Calendar on mobile to help customers strengthen the confidentiality of their data while helping address a broad range of data sovereignty and compliance requirements. Today, we’re happy to announce that client-side encryption for Google Calendar is now generally available on Android and iOS devices for eligible Workspace editions. | Available to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus customers only. | Learn more about client-side encryption for Google Calendar on mobile. 

Adding more flexibility to working locations in Google Calendar 
We’re introducing the option to set working locations in Calendar that indicate where you’re working for specific portions of the day.
