In 2021, we introduced a new Google Contacts (contacts.google.com) experience that provides rich information about your colleagues and stakeholders. Starting today, every contact with a Workspace email has a new profile link that is easy to copy, share, and send within an organization. This new profile link helps everyone in your organization get in touch and stay connected.

    • Once available, access “Copy profile link” by one of two ways: 
      • In the detailed view for a contact, select the "3-dot-menu" and click the "Copy profile link" button. 
      • In a contact list view (e.g. contacts.google.com), select the "3-dot-menu" for a contact row and click the "Copy profile link" button. 
    • You can also enter "contacts.google.com/emailaddress" into the web browser address bar to look for a person in your organization. Email formats include: jane.smith@domain.com, jane.smith@domain, and jane.smith. 
Rollout pace 
  • Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains: Extended rollout (potentially longer than 15 days for feature visibility) starting on June 30, 2022, with anticipated completion by July 18, 2022. Due to the staggered nature of this rollout, end users may be able to copy profile links from their browser address bar before having access to the "Copy profile link" button.

Quick summary 
Admins for select Google Workspace editions can update their client-side encryption configurations to include Drive for Desktop. When enabled, users can synchronize their Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides files with Drive for Desktop on Windows & Mac OS devices. Synced, encrypted files will appear as shortcuts on Windows and symbolic links on Mac OS.




Support for Mac OS users on File Provider will be introduced in a future release — we will provide an update on the Workspace Updates blog at that time.


Additionally, this also allows client-side encryption users in your domain to encrypt and upload local files to Google Drive.

What’s changing 
In the Alert Center, admins will now be notified of select critical and sensitive changes made to their Google Workspace configurations. Specifically, we will issue an alert when any of the following events are surfaced in the audit log: 
  • Changes to the primary admin 
  • SSO profile added: when a third-party SSO profile has been added and enabled for your organization. 
  • SSO profile updated: when a third-party SSO profile has been updated for your organization. 
  • SSO profile deleted: when a third-party SSO profile has been deleted for your organization. 
  • Password reset for super admins: when a password was reset for a super admin account. 

We plan to introduce alerts for more high risk actions over time — we will provide updates here once available.

Why it’s important 
These additional intelligent alerts will closely monitor several sensitive actions, making it easier for admins to stay on top of high risk changes to their environment and potentially malicious actions being taken by bad actors. 


For each alert, admins and super admins will receive an email notification with key information regarding the event. Once the alert is received, admins can use the security investigation tool to further investigate the incident.

What’s changing 
Earlier this year, we introduced a new, integrated view for Gmail, making it easy to move between critical applications like Gmail, Chat and Meet in one unified location. We’d like to share some additional updates regarding the rollout of this feature.


Beginning today, we are rolling out the opt-out experience to a segment of Gmail users. This means that select users will see the new Gmail experience by default, but they will still have the option to revert to classic Gmail via the settings menu. As we continue to roll out this new experience, the new Gmail view will also continue to be available for users who want to enable it via Quick settings. 


As always, we will carefully monitor and address feedback from users during this rollout period and in the future.

Why it matters 
When enabled, the new navigation menu allows you to easily switch between your inbox, important conversations, and join meetings without having to switch between tabs or open a new window. We hope this new experience makes it easier for you to stay on top of what’s important and get work done faster in a single, focused location. 


We’d like to note that the new experience will vary based on your Google Workspace edition. Specifically, if you only have Gmail, you will continue to have a Gmail-only configuration in the new navigation:

Users who use Gmail, Chat and Meet, can specify which apps they would like included in their new view by customizing their apps in quick settings. They also have the option to use a Gmail-only configuration.

Quick summary 
In Google Meet, you can now see participants who were invited to the meeting but have yet to join the call. These participants can be found under the “Also invited” heading. Additionally, you’ll also be able to see the RSVP status of everyone on the invite, including “optional” attendees and RSVP notes. 




From here, you can reach out to those users via Chat to confirm whether they will be joining directly from Meet, eliminating the need to open additional tabs or switch to another app. 




We hope this feature makes it easier for you to start meetings more efficiently by quickly determining who has not joined and sending them a nudge via Chat directly from Meet.

What’s changing
In 2019, we announced Office editing to make it easier to work with Microsoft Office files in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides and launched better features allowing you to work anywhere with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides in offline mode. Starting today, you can work offline with Microsoft Office files on your desktop.

Why you’d use it 
This feature brings the collaboration benefits of Google Workspace to Microsoft Office files. At times when your device is offline, you’re now able to edit, comment, and collaborate on Office files using Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Any changes made to files while offline will then sync to Drive once you are connected again. 


Additional details
This change only applies to files that have already been opened in Office editing mode.

Quick summary 
In April, we announced a beta that allows users to respond to external forms that contain file upload questions, while also helping to prevent the leak of sensitive and confidential information. 

This feature is now generally available and will apply your domain’s existing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) for Drive policies to files that your users submit to Google Forms, without creating new rules or updating any existing ones.

  • Admins: 
    • DLP for Drive rules defined for your domain will be applied to files submitted to file upload questions in Google Forms outside your domain. 
    • If you are not using DLP for Drive, you can create DLP rules at the domain, OU, or group level in the Admin console under Security > Data protection. You can apply block, warn or audit actions. Visit the Help Center to learn more about turning Workspace DLP on for your organization. 
  • End users: 
    • End users can respond to forms as usual, but can now respond to forms outside their domain, including forms that have file upload questions. 
    •  If a form violates DLP for Drive rules for their domain, end users may see warnings or be blocked from submitting.

In addition to a Google Sheets file, admins can now download log event data from the security investigation tool to as a .CSV file. This will allow admins to further analyze data outside of the tool. The export limit for .CSV files is 100,000 rows.




Note: Sharing permissions for exported Sheets files will default to your domain configuration (meaning, if newly created files are shared with everyone, the exported data will be available to everyone).

We’re updating the user experience for removing participants from a meeting in Google Meet. Now, when a host or co-host removes a participant from a call, they will be prompted with additional actions. Specifically, they can opt to:

    • Note: We recommend using the “block” functionality only when absolutely necessary.

What’s changing 
Admins can set Google Voice call recording options for any organizational unit or group in their organization. You can choose to automatically record calls–incoming, outgoing, or both–or allow users to manually record their calls. If you turn on automatic call recording, users receive a notification that the feature is on. 


For both options, you can set up an audio notification to be played when recording has started. For on-demand manual recording, you can also set up a notification for when recording has stopped. 


Admins can access any call recordings from Google Vault. Users can access their own recordings from their Voice call logs.

Why it’s important 
For admins, recording calls is a key component of policy management and compliance. Recording calls with customers ensures that a proper track record exists for each customer interaction. For business processes that require a customer record before processing customer requests, creating and confirming a call recording allows the request to take place. 


For users, recording calls for later reference provides an alternative to note-taking and allows for sharing within the organization. 

Getting started 

  • Admins: The option to automatically record calls will be OFF by default. The option to allow users to record their calls will be ON by default, with a notification at the start and end of call recording. Both options can be changed at the organizational unit or group level. Visit the Help Center to learn more about controlling recorded calls in Voice

  • End users: There is no end user setting to turn call recording on or off. If automatic recording is enabled by your administrator, an Auto Rec notification appears on your Voice call screen.


Users see “Auto Rec” if automatic recording is turned on



If on-demand recording is enabled by your administrator, a Record button appears and is active on your Voice call screen. 

If on-demand recording is turned on, users can record their calls using the Record button

You can now use VirusTotal to view deeper insights on Chrome log events in the Security Investigation Tool. This ability is already available for Gmail event logs



Who’s impacted

Why it’s important 
Admins can use the VirusTotal integration to view more information on Chrome log events, specifically to determine whether any content transfers via Chrome are malicious. 


Additional details 
VirusTotal provides an investigation layer on top of alerts but isn’t being used directly for detection or alerting. 


Data (file attachment hashes) is only shared to VirusTotal after the admin selects to view the VirusTotal report. No data is otherwise shared. 


VirusTotal data is shared with the broader security community. This enables security vendors to collaborate with each other, share important details, and take action to fight security threats. 


The VirusTotal report has two versions: Standard and Enhanced. The Standard version is displayed for admins who have the Security Center > VirusTotal > View report privilege, and who have one of the required Google Workspace editions. The Enhanced version is automatically displayed for paid VirusTotal subscribers who have an active virustotal.com login session with their VT Enterprise user account. Set a custom duration for "Do Not Disturb" in Google Chat on web and iOS devices

What’s changing 
Admins using Context-Aware Access can now provide more information to end users when their access is blocked using the user remediation feature. This feature will help end users quickly understand what steps they need to take to re-access Google Workspace.

Why it’s important 
Context-Aware Access allows admins to assign granular access control policies to apps based on attributes such as user identity, location, device security status, IP address, etc. When a user or device does not meet the requirements, they will be unable to access the respective apps. 


Currently, the only course of action for end users is to contact their admin for further support, which causes unnecessary delay, churn, and support calls. End user remediation will enable admins to provide their users with details about why their access has been denied and what steps need to be taken to restore access. 


Further, once an admin enables remediation, they’ll see a message in the Admin console noting whether remediation is enabled. Each remediation action corresponds to an attribute which is causing access to be denied. Visit the Help Center for a list of the possible remediation actions that may be shown to end users.

  • Admins: Admins can apply the new remediation messaging within the Context-aware Access section of the admin UI by navigating to Security > Context-Aware Access > User Message. Visit the Help Center to learn more about allowing users to unblock apps with remediation messages in Context Aware Access.

Recently, we introduced the ability to create spaces in Google Chat that you can share with others in your organization to join via link. We’re now adding the ability for Admins to set the default for newly created spaces and enable sharing scoped to specific audiences.

Why it matters 
Admins can now set the default access for new spaces and who can find them by defining the appropriate target audiences. While creating topic-based conversations that can be shared more broadly within an organization fosters collaboration and helps build community, there may still be instances where an organization may wish to target which group or audience can discover or join a space. With additional admin controls, admins can help users discover and join relevant conversations to encourage collaboration more effectively.

  • Admins: The creation of “Discoverable” spaces will be OFF by default and can be enabled at the domain level. Visit the Help Center to learn more about Google Chat sharing settings

Bringing Google Meet features to Google Duo for a single, integrated video solution 
In the coming weeks, all Google Meet features will be added to the Duo app. Later this year, we’ll rename the Duo app to Google Meet, our single video communications service across Google accessible to everyone at no-cost. | Learn more

What’s changing 
To support the millions of users who rely on our technology for video calls and meetings, we’ve made deep investments in both Google Duo and Google Meet. For those using Duo as their cross-platform video calling appservice, we’ve introduced new features like group calls for up to 32 people, the addition of doodles, masks, and fun effects with family mode, and video calling on tablets, foldables, smart devices, and TVs. 


And for those using Google Meet, we’ve introduced more than 100 features and improvements since we made Meet available to everyone in 2020. This included a more intuitive interface, virtual backgrounds and effects, live captions and features that help people feel seen and heard, like auto-light adjustments and noise cancelation. We’ve also made quality and reliability improvements as well as introducing new moderation controls to help keep meetings safe and productive. Outside of video conferencing for work, we continue to see millions of people around the globe use video meetings to host game nights, parent-teacher conferences, and gatherings of their community groups. 


In the coming weeks, we’re adding all the Google Meet features to the Duo app, so users can easily schedule a video meeting at a time that works for everyone or continue using video calling to instantly connect with a person or group. Later this year, we’ll rename the Duo app to Google Meet, our single video communications service across Google that is available to everyone at no-cost. 


There is no need to download a new app, if you are a Duo user, simply ensure you have the latest version of Duo installed on your device.

Why it’s important 
As part of our continued investment in helping people stay connected, and to adapt to evolving users needs, we’re upgrading the Duo experience to include all Google Meet features. This integrated experience will provide users with a single solution service for both video calling and meetings with people across their lives. 


We’re committed to making the transition from Duo to Meet as smooth as possible. Admins will receive an email detailing the impact to their organization. For more information, please see the Cloud Blog and our Help Center


Important Note: For Google Workspace users, Meet can continue to be used on the web or mobile, as long as the Meet service is ON in the admin console.





Additional details 
Beginning this month, we’ll add the following features to the Duo mobile app: 
  • Customize virtual backgrounds in calls and meetings 
  • Schedule meetings so everyone can join at a time that’s convenient for them 
  • In-meeting chat for deeper engagement 
  • Live share content to enable interaction with all participants on the call 
  • Get real-time closed captions to better support accessibility and boost participation Increase size of video calls from a current limit of 32 to 100 participants 
  • Integrate with other tools, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messages and more

Getting started 
  • Admins: As the admin, you can: 
    • Manage Duo video calling access features by turning off the Additional Google services control. If you turn OFF the Additional Google Services control for your users, you’ll also disrupt any apps without individual ON/OFF switches. Note: This applies to Duo video calling features only, this will not impact Meet functionality. 
    • Control Google Meet access using the Admin console. To prevent your users from losing access, we recommend keeping Google Meet ON for your organization. 
      • If you do turn Meet OFF for your organization, users who have a Duo account and are registered with your organization account will lose access to Duo when Duo updates to Meet. 
      • Visit the Help Center to learn more about how Duo is being upgraded

  • Education Admins: 
    • Users under 18: Duo is currently restricted for users under 18. Admins do not need to change any settings to ensure that under 18 users will continue to not have access to Duo calling features when the Duo app is updated. 
    • Users over 18: If you have the Additional Google services control enabled, users over 18 will continue to have access to Duo calling features. 
      • If you do not want over 18 users to have access to Duo calling features, turn the Additional Google services control off which will prevent users from using all Additional Services that do not have an individual ON/OFF control. 

  • End Users: Make sure you have the latest version of Duo:
