Last year we launched add-ons, tools created by developer partners that provide even more helpful features in your documents, spreadsheets and forms. Previously, the ability to install add-ons was controlled centrally by Google Apps admins in the Admin console, but users retained ultimate control of choosing which individual add-ons to install or remove.

Today we’re releasing a couple of updates to help developers share their add-ons with an even wider audience and give Google Apps admins more consistent control over which add-ons are used in their organizations.

Developers can now choose to make their add-ons for Docs, Sheets and Forms available for installation across entire domains, which automatically creates a Google Apps Marketplace listing that is easy for customers to find. Admins can then install these handy add-ons for their whole organization using just a couple of clicks.

Admins will continue to have a “disable add-ons” option for their users, but they can also whitelist add-ons via the Google Apps Marketplace for their entire domain or a specific team. Check out the Help Center for details on the available options.

Keep in mind that it will take some time for add-on developers to publish their apps for domain-wide installation, so you might not find all your favorite add-ons in the Apps Marketplace yet.

Note: this launch will not impact existing add-on installation settings.

As recently communicated, Google Forms is in the process of upgrading older forms to the new version of Google Forms, followed by the auto-upgrading of legacy themes to allow for customization and a better mobile experience moving forward.

After the theme upgrade, some text and colors from older forms may not show up properly, in which case Forms editors may want to choose new themes for their affected forms.

Starting today, people working with affected forms will see a notification alerting them that their current theme is no longer supported and encouraging them to choose a new theme.

The legacy theme upgrades will happen on a rolling schedule starting in about 2-3 weeks (after the completion of the upgrade to the new Google Forms) and will take several months to complete.

Release track:
Rapid release, with Scheduled release coming in early 2015**

**Update (September 14, 2015): With the recent launch of the new Google Forms, which contains a variety of new themes, we will no longer be migrating themes from forms created in the old theme framework (those created prior to February 2013). When trying the new Google Forms, users with forms created in the old framework will have the option to select a new theme. All responses will be unaffected.

In the spirit of giving you even more flexibility and customization, we’re launching add-ons for Google Forms--new tools, created by developer partners, that bring even more features to your surveys (just like add-ons for Docs and Sheets).

Check out the growing list of available add-ons, several of which are particularly relevant for education, from the “Add-ons” menu in Forms, or by directly visiting the Forms add-ons store.

If you have already disabled add-ons for your domain in the Admin console, Forms add-ons will be defaulted off. To change this setting, click on Google Apps -> Drive > General Settings and check/un-check the “Allow users to install Google Docs add-ons” box.

In the coming weeks, we’ll begin auto-upgrading all legacy forms created in the old version of Google Forms (those created prior to February 2013) to the new version. The new version of Forms supports higher response rates and advanced features like custom themes, randomizing questions, and one response per person.

All responses from the old Forms will migrate seamlessly to the new version. Legacy form themes and stylings will migrate as well with potential visual differences. After the upgrade is complete, a notification will appear when an editor opens any upgraded form, indicating that the upgrade has occurred. At that point, we recommend choosing a newer theme (or customizing one) to ensure a smooth user experience with your form.

In the future, we’ll be auto-converting legacy themes to comparable versions in the new system, which will allow for theme customization and a better mobile experience (additional communication to follow in advance of this change).

Applying themes to forms is a great way to personalize and tailor them to their intended audience. With this launch, people working with Google Forms will now be able to apply custom themes to their forms.

This includes adding custom images or logos to the header and page background, specifying the font details (type, size, color) and paragraph alignment for the form text, and choosing the color for the form and page backgrounds. We’ve also refreshed the overall Forms UI and added a brand new gallery of modern default themes.

In addition, if a form using a custom theme is shared within a domain, others can copy that theme in order to use it themselves. This helps to ensure a consistent look and feel across forms used in that domain.
